Finding Closure

from someone who has been "out" for over a year, maybe I could pass some form of comfort to anyone that is struggling with this.

Finding "closure" is something that just doesn't happen - you dont wake up one day and say, "at last I have found closure"; well at least it didn't for me personally. Someone posted recently (forgive me for not remembering) "that if you have to go NC you are dealing with a narc/path". In other words if you have to go to this extent with someone you can pretty much know this person was very dangerous and toxic to your well being. I can apply this same concept as to why there is such an utter lack of closure with such a trauma. There is no closure that will EVER come from them because what they did was so wrong, the entire relationship was built on a foundation of lies and deceit; without truth and clarity in such a relationship there can never be the closure we want.

I came to understand that the specifics did not matter such as: how could he have said that, or how could he have just moved on, or how could everything he was not been real, how could everything we shared for how ever long been forgotten and dismissed so easily. Because he was disordered and wrong, the answer is that simple but our search for closure never is. A good share of our lack of closure is attributing normal human behaviors to a person who simply does not have them, and always remember if he did not have them with you, he is exhibiting them in the same pretense manner to who ever he is with. He is a fraud in all his cycles, from honeymoon to D&D, from his wives, girlfriends and in his triangulations.

Closure is finding understanding from within to simply discover and learn there wasn't a damn thing you could have done to change this person into a person that was not disordered, he has had many love him before you and he will many who will love him with the same passion after you. He will never be non disordered for them either.

That is my peace and closure x0

Great post!! That is the beauty of coming to this website, finding great posts and threads like this. I have often wondered about this "closure" thing, and your words put it all there for me. The good thing about where I am now is that I no longer have any desire to write to him. It is those simple two words......why bother. xoxoACgirl

Closure

when you can get through the day without intrusive thoughts.....Oh how I look forward to that day. It is better but I can't wait until my head hits the pillow and I realize that he has not taken up space in my brain for a full 24 hours! Thank you for sharing with us...

When I read the title to your post I thought to myself " finding closure? There is no such thing" and was worried that we would have to emphasize that to you. I was pleasantly surprised to see, immediately, that that was not the case! Truer words could not be spoken. This post is dead on, informative, and a beautiful read. Great job and a true inspiration to us all! :)

Thank you

Your post spoke so much truth to me. I'm only 9 days nc, I'm dealing with so much anger, but any contact will not bring the closure I'm thinking I need to move on.

Absolutely NOT

Contact will never bring you closure, not in a million years- because I did it for 6 years (not a million ha) and it never brought me one ounce of closure - NC will free you and lead you to closure. The pain of NC cant even compare to the pain and hell I suffered having contact with this rotten to the core person, if you can call him a person.

Thank you so much for writing this

It has only been about 10 weeks since my D & D. I have finally strung 7 days together without leaving him VM emails or letters. 7 days....now I just have to get through the next 30 years or so. Not sure how I am going to do it. I received no closure....nothing. Thank you for addressing this. It is so HARD. He has been part of my life for 28 years. Not sure how I am going to do this....but I know I never have to listen to one of his lies ever again. Never. Thank God.

28 YEARS!!

I commend you - do yourself a favor and dont spend another second trying to figure out his lies from the truth - he is not worth one more second of your life. Oh I am sorry what truth, they are pathological liars I almost forgot, no I didnt forget I would be lying if I did, I did not share that long of period with my x but for what its worth my wise counselor once told me: "If you stay, the pain will never end, if you leave the pain WILL end and that is guaranteed"! You need a life of truth my friend something you have not had in a very long time - I lived a life of LIES for 6 years with the reptile; empty promises and empty declarations of love; as I look back I could tell you lies that a 5 year old child would probably not believe. Well what can I say, I was under a deep deep trance - picture the snake with the tongue staring you deep in the eyes - I often wonder how often he slithers from underneath his rock to predate others. How are you going to do it? With LOTS of support and truth on your side; truth is their antithesis - truth is their enemy, truth is your best friend and it will set you free. Again I commend you !!!! nlb, this is so awesome

and so very true. As I walked the path (right alongside you...I'm 14 months out) I struggled with many feelings and revelations, not the least of which was forgiving myself for staying involved in it for so long by refusing to accept the truth. Your post reminds me of something I heard on the Oprah show that was so poignant I wrote it in the front of my writing journal and referred to it time and again to help me heal and let go... Oprah said: "Forgiveness is letting go of the idea that the outcome could have been any different..." Bingo. Acceptance. Acceptance and letting go! Keys to true freedom and peace! Hugs to you nlb, I am so grateful you are back to share. xoxo (not) spinning. AND IT FEELS GREAT!

Hey Spinning

Closure IS peace, when you can get through each day without intrusive thoughts "why did he do this to me" he did it to you because he was disordered that's why - part of closure also involves to quit blaming yourself because you fell in love with a total fraud and like you said Spinning the outcome is the same for everyone. The honeymoon will cease for all their partners and its replaced with all their dangerous games, that is if you want to stick around to endure it. xoxo back at you

Very well said! You always

Very well said! You always hit right to the core! Excellent! It is so hard to wrap your head around but you do get to the point where you can no longer deal with this kind of person and pain!!! It is what it is! Unfortunately. I have chosen myself finally! Time to face my inner demons from childhoood and move on to a life of happiness. I have so much to give and I expect the same now from my mate. Thanks for all your insight. You are great! Love, Ali

Neverlookback, thank you

Neverlookback, thank you soooo much for this beautifully poetic post! As I read your words, I felt like I was meditation & in a deep state of understanding of everythig I've been through in the last 4 years. Despite the fact that it is so regrettable that so many of us have been through so much trauma, we have a wonderful community here & I am so grateful to you & all the others for sharing their strength, wisdom and love. Thank you all xx

I am glad

My post made you feel better. I can remember a year back how grateful I was to the members who would post and give me personal hope that you can recover and I thought I would never reach that stage. For the most part I am recovered but being a survivor or trauma there is a part of me that feels the need to reach out at times to talk to those that have suffered the same type of trauma. It makes me feel good to give others hope x0
