PTSS vs. PTSD

I remember that what we now call Post Traumatic Stress Disorder used to be called Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. I like the term Syndrome better than Disorder. Disorder seems to imply that we are somehow responsible for the behavior...as if we are purposely acting crazy-like.

After all, the term personality disorder carries with it an implied rebelliousness or defiant behavior. I am NOT pushing a self-serving agenda when I break down and start sobbing or when I shake uncontrollably or when I am in a foglike condition for days on end or when I scream at my son and then immediately feel like a rotten mother.

Does anyone know why the name was changed from Syndrome to Disorder?

Please share any of your Post Traumatic Stress symptoms.

semantics

The names of syndromes etc are regularly changed. PTSD used to be "Shell Shock" Psycho/Sociopathy and Narcissism all used to be "Moral Insanity" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PTSD ~~~~~~~~~~~~ My Abuse Information Site Online Coaching & Help

question for Barbara

If a person doesn't get help for post traumatic problems, can they go insane or suffer any known end-organ damage? What do you think about methods like EMDR(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) or EFT(Emotional Freedom Technique) to alleviate PTSD? Can just talking to a therapist cure PTSD?

EMDR has shown great results EFT - not so much Cognitive Behavioral Therapist can help you manage and eventually get rid of the symptoms. I don't believe in the word CURE for anything. My PTSD is permanent - probably had it since I was young - didn't start any sort of treatment until I was in 30s and completely disabled. And yet, Barbara, you use

And yet, Barbara, you use all of it for the good of others. You are a really amazing woman...with all you've suffered, evil did not conquer you; you are out there kicking its ass every day.
