Why Do You Shoot Yourself in the Foot?

Have your heard the old story of the fellow who was complaining about being wounded? He told his buddy that he had loaded his gun, and "accidentally" shot himself in the foot. His buddy asked him what he was going to do about the wound, and he said, "I'm reloading my gun, now."
I have been reading the posts and comments for the past few days, and it seems to me that we would rather reload the gun and risk shooting ourselves in the foot again, than face the fact that we shouldn't be carrying the gun in the first place. We want to blame the man who placed the gun in our hands, rather than ourselves for holding on to something so dangerous and possibly fatal. We deny we have the power or responsibility to refuse the gun, or at the very least to put it down and stay away from it after we shoot ourselves in the foot the first time. We make excuses, "Oh, the gun is so good looking! So Sexy! I look good when I'm with the gun!" and we would rather live a dangerous life with the gun, risking another wound, than putting the thing in a box, locking it, and throwing away the key!!!
Seriously, would you want your daughter, sister, best friend, to ever run the risk of shooting herself in the foot? If not, the question becomes why do you want to run the risk of shooting yourself in the foot? Again? Really, is the gun worth it?
