The Red Flags for Me

Ah, hindsight is 20/20.

Detachment. That was the reddest flag of all. He would be home physically but not mentally or emotionally. Family life would whir about him, and he was somewhere else in his twisted little mind. Always reading books, constantly reading and when not reading running errands, solo, or off riding his bike, solo, or watching football solo.

Friendless. Throughout our marriage he had no friends. When we would invite other families for get-togethers, often times the husbands would not accompany their wives and the narc would be offended.

Lack of empathy. He claimed it was not his strong-suit. I claimed empathy is part of what makes us human. But narcs are not human. He could not comfort us when we were sick or sad. He showed no emotions at funerals. A cold soulless stone.

Robotic. He is robotic in his movements. Obsessively drinking certain drinks, at certain hours, goes through the motions, rigid, no spontaneity.

Lying. They start off small, then increase. They slip so effortlessly from his lips. And when confronted, he defends, protests, and convinced me I was crazy for ever suggesting that he could lie. Pathological, evil, inhuman.

Temper. Rages, outbursts, screaming, tantrums, hurling, hurting. Evil, pure evil.

Masturbation. His favorite pastime. As Woody Allen said "Don't knock masturbation; it's sex with someone I love."

mine did the ritual drinks.

mine did the ritual drinks. One for cold weather one for other seasons. He was friendless no other couples wanted contact with us, he was envious of everyone, made problems on his jobs by sabotaging co-workers and management. Always alone.

Detachment for sure. Really

Detachment for sure. Really spooky how he would ignore me and the kids. He knew enough to "act" involved at times but he really wasn't. He had tons of friends. That was the one thing that was very different about him. He had a bevy of admirers and he worked hard to make sure they admired him. But his ex girlfriends/wives would have nothing to do with him. Secretive with money. Even when he had kids. Once took our eldest's very generous birthday check from Grandma and deposited into his account. Said later he thought it was for him just because he was a great guy. Subtly undermining of me to family and friends from nearly the very beginning. I didn't want to believe it at first.

I can surely relate to this.

I can surely relate to this. Mine traveled constantly and I always felt lonely when he was around. We were not allowed to be sick. He would decide for me and the kids that there was nothing wrong with us we were just lazy. He told me repeatedly that having emotions was just a waste of time. I made the mistake once of telling him I was depressed. We were driving in the car without kids. He drove me around for an hour and a half screaming at me how ridiculous I was. I begged him to take me home or let me out of the car. No sorry he was not finished yelling ,raging, spitting and telling me I did not have a right to feel depressed. Boy that cheered me right up!

same here

We were not allowed to be sick. He would decide for me and the kids that there was nothing wrong with us we were just lazy. Same with my exNH - he has even made comments to my disability doctor, etc. Been severely disabled since 1995 - you can just imagine the crap he says to me and to the kids about me. ~~~~~~~~~~~ The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off. - Gloria Steinem

"We were not allowed to be

"We were not allowed to be sick. He would decide for me and the kids that there was nothing wrong with us we were just lazy." My STBX Narc had some odd reactions to OTHER people being sick, too (if he as much as had the sniffles he canceled his entire life and could be found groaning audibly in a hot bath with a washcloth over his eyes). The only thing he ever had sympathy for in other people was headaches. Then he over-babied you. I kept wanting to say "it's JUST a headache!!!" But one morning I wanted to go to the ER because I'd been up all morning with chest pains (which should be alarming, right?) and he physically blocked me from leaving the house. It was like it personally threatened him or something. So hard to reconcile that in my head.

Sounds like we have a lot in common. Mine Soon2bx travels constantly for business. If I asked him to cut back on his travel he would reply "My work is the most important thing in the world to me". Family didn't even rate a close second. Once when my son was little he was running 106 temperature. I was frantic, he said "It's nothing, kids get sick, stop being so neurotic!" I wish there were a way to private message each other, is there?

travel and work

My ex had a different take on this. He always pretended he hated to be away but he was doing it all for me and the kids. He totally ignored us all when he was home and really the only peace we had was when he was gone. The kids always asked when he was leaving town again. I have wondered many times what really went on when he was away. My mother said so many times that there was no way for me to know what he has really been doing all these years as he basically did not live with me. He spent so much money when he traveled. I think they do it because they have this whole other secret life. My boys would joke that he probably had another wife and kids somewhere. Could be. I don't know about the private messaging but I would welcome it.Perhaps someone else could say.

My exN worked out of town alot too. We waited for him to come home and then we couldn't wait for him to leave. I don't know why we wanted him home, he was miserable to be around. I guess we kept hoping the next weekend would be better. Even when he did come home, he "still wasn't home". He always had errands to run, a trip for morning tacos would take up most of the morning (of course, the kids couldn't tag along cause he'd "be right back"). He'd come back home on Friday nites, then it became Saturday nites, then Sunday for a while but then had to get back so he could be ready for Monday, then it got to where they would be working all weekend...WTF?! I'm so stupid, I actually fell for it! Needless to say, he was living with another woman and her kids...(you can read my story)
