Psychopath

I met someone online 1 year ago. After some months chatting over the internet, we decided to meet as we don’t live that far from each other. I’m in my mid 20’s and he is in his early 30’s.
I felt in love and we started a relationship. I met his family and felt a very special connection with his mother. She has her own business and wanted me to work with her. She wanted to give us a big wedding party, etc.
Early on I could sense that something was “off” about him, but I was in love and didn’t pay much attention until he started drinking too much and became dangerous. Last week, he said I should stop pushing his buttons or otherwise he would hurt me physically…he said that sometimes it’s very hard to control himself and he could just SEE RED . Then he looked deeply into my eyes and said I should be careful because there were so many knives in the kitchen. And then he busted into laughing. As soon as he went to the bathroom, I run away from his house to never come back. I get that he has personality disorders and so on. I know I can’t change him. I have blocked his emails, cell phone, FB, etc.
My question is:
Should I go to the police and tell them happened? Can they do something effectively to protect me?
I’d like to contact his mother to tell her know about everything. I really like her but I don’t think she will believe me because he is her “golden child”.
Some friends of mine tell me to let this whole thing as it’s. Some of them tell me to let her know what happened.
I don’t want to tell my family about this because they would freak out.
