Nice accent... is that real??

I’ve noticed that my lovely future Ex-husband has now developed a southern accent. We lived in another state (A) for about 5 years together. When we started dating he had no accent. He never has. He was born in Boston, he doesn’t even have one of those accents.

He used to hate state A. After I landed a job in state A and we bought a house, he immediately wanted to move back to state B (he went to high school there also) because he couldn’t relate to people in state A and found them “rednecks” that only drove trucks. Since then, we’ve moved back to state B separately and I’ve noticed an ACCENT and he even sometimes says “Howdy, ma’me”. He’s started collecting artwork from state A to put in his office. He even told me that a girl he works with is from state A and he loves when she talks because he feels like he is home. HE’S NOT FROM THERE!!

His bizarre behavior confuses me. Oh, and he also picked up the adorable habit of “dipping tobacco” while we lived there and the next time he buys a new automobile, well, he wants a truck, of course.

Mirroring

I think that this accent thing is really just part and parcel of the disorder. Cluster Bs notoriously mirror those who provide supply while they are idealizing them. It also is part of their shallowness or inner emptiness. They don't really have a "self" and they assume the external trappings of the people who they feed off of to not only fit in with the crowd but to define themselves. My ExN was born and raised in the Midwest. He moved to Boston when he went to college. He purposely set out to lose his Midwesternness including his "accent". BTW he was from the state who has an "accent" that newscasters learn because it is so "generic". At any rate - he didn't purposely adopt a Beantown accent but more of a southern New England accent (I'm from CT and he now says words like me). I found that to be a little odd when he told me the story. I would never consciously try to adopt the accent of somewhere else. It was one of those little red flags that I felt but ignored. Then, he told me another weird one that I should have paid a little more attention to. He said that after he dumped his fiance, he purposely devised a new persona. He grew a ponytail in, what he called, a "sociological experiment." Because he said before he had it, he was bland. And that people treated him differently, more respectfully, after he had a ponytail, started dressing in all black, and wearing a heavy silver chain bracelet and necklace. He said that the New England accent and new style of dressing gave him power and made people pay attention to him. Weird. I mean, I get devising your own style and all that. But to do it consciously, as an experiment to see how others will treat you as opposed to doing it because it was your way of expressing yourself, seems a bit odd. And, too bad for him because - it's one thing to be 25 with thick hair and a ponytail, dressed in black, with chains and a ciggie hanging out of your mouth. There's a little scary sexiness there I guess. But when you're 37 and have a pretty distinct receding hairline (the further back the hairline goes, the longer the ponytail in back gets ... ewwww), the bad-boy look is not only sophmoric but pretty laughable. Anyway - this accent changing crap doesn't surprise me at all. It's all part and parcel of the inner void these jerks have.

He is doing what he has been doing since childhood. Mirroring/mimicking. Odd that it would take him 5 years to develop though. That void usually drives them to perfect the skill rather quickly. As all good predators do , they adapt and over come with speed. Well with all the devaluing he was doing to the southern state he lives in he must have believed in his disordered brain that he would conform them to his ways at some point. LOL. Dont mess with the south! When he woke up and realized that he could not move that mountain i suppose he thought "humm, if ya cant beat em join em". xo :) only one way to go...Forward (tm?)

You're welcome

=) It sometimes really helps to see these losers for what they are because I think we all have a tendency to elevate them in our minds way higher in importance than their true little selves really are. ;-)

Strange accent

The ex-Psych professor was born in Berkeley... but he moved to Massachusetts when he was 7. He had a weird accent. He didn't really sound like a New Englander. (I've heard the Bostonian accent in Boston, thanks to my sister living there) He could be very low, or sound very effeminate. The only person whose accent remotely like his was my former Narc boss, who had a lisp and definitely sounded effeminate. I could've mistaken the two on the phone. The ex-P sounded very girly. Some speculated he was aping me... no wonder he D&D'd me for a butch girlfriend.

Funny topic

My very pathetic N suddenly would turn into "eminem" around the hood;) Stupid, plain stupid. It had to be the drugs? :) I witnessed this 2 times and that was 2 times too many!

My Narc would take on

My Narc would take on (badly) the accent of whoever he was talking to. It was SO embarrassing. Often, he'd talk slowly and as if the person with the accent also lacked basic intelligence. He didn't do it every time, but he'did it often enough.

Accents

If we would be at a restaurant with a Hispanic wait person, my narc would really turn on the Mexican accent, didn't really have one otherwise. He was born in the midwest! And even sometimes started speaking in Spanish. I think he thought I didn't know what they were saying, and that I felt left out, but I usually got enough that I got the gist of what they were saying.

Too funny.

Yeah, whatever suits them at the moment! I don't think they understand that there is continuity in others' thinking. I found all of this funny, for some reason. I sorta like rednecks and dudes in trucks can be alright if the truck isn't too chromey and pimped out (those can be Ns, in my experience). I also heard chatter in the radio about an interview w/ Keanu Reeves where he just sort of morphed into an accent in the middle of it and was suddenly British. It just made me laugh!
