Fifty Shades of Disturbing
Fifty Shades of Disturbing
Hi everyone,
Haven't posted here in a while. I hope you're all doing well on your road out of Narcville. I think of you a lot and pray for the best for us all.
And speaking of Narcville -- wow -- I need to vent about the Fifty Shades of Narcisissm series that is being devoured by so many friends of mine! Am I the only one who sees this series as not only the most poorly written schlock ever, but also containing a very harmful message? Message: If you love your emotionally and physically abusive man enough, he will change for you!
Sound familiar?
At first the book (I've only gotten partially through the first one) was mildly triggering. The physical description of Christian Grey closely resembled my narc, the infamous CharlieSheenWinning. There were other things, too -- the jealousy, the food issue ("Did you eat? You need to eat? You don't eat enough!" -- CSW said these things often), the outsized ego of Mr. Grey.
But then I'll-Only-Abuse-You-When-You-Deserve-It-Grey became even *more* of a wankjob than CharlieSheenWinning ever was. And boy howdy is that saying something!!!
Some (not all, thankfully) of my friends are all ga-ga over these books and Christian I'm-Really-Just-Misunderstood-Here-Let-Me-Beat-Your-Bottom-Red-So-You-Can-Understand-Me-Better Grey.
If BDSM is your thing, okay. It doesn't float my boat, but everyone is different. The trouble is, it's not even *Anastasia's* thing. She's only doing it to please her man because if she pleases him enough she will win his love and he won't discard her.
YEESH!!!!!
Am I blowing it out of proportion or are the ideas in these books totally harmful? I can't help, given my experiences, but think that they are.
Hugs,
Lobo
P.S. Most narcissistic part: When Anastasia asks what she gets if she signs the contract to have Grey dominate her entire life. "Me," he says. >.<
