Falling for the False Self

Falling for the false self.

I was reading this article on the Narc Mothers :
http://samvak.tripod.com/faq64.html

It discusses the False self and wrote:
"a person possessed by a False Self has no functioning True Self."

I know that the EXN completely changed overnight. I was taken back by the marked change in his personality. It was dark. Now I see from this article that this was his real "true" self and there was nothing there. Nothing. He was void, vacant, distant, cold, withdrew, withheld, silence. When really this was him showing me his true self. His words, when I asked about what was going on with him - the reason he gave was that he was having a hard time dealing with leaving me. I wondered why he was already leaving me while still physically BEING with me. His rageful response to my bewilderment was basically "This is ME, deal with it!". I really see this interaction as him really showing me who he was for the very 1st time.

Everything I knew about his character was his false self, a string of lies, all concocted to produce supply and ego stroking. He was the center of attention and he loved that. But after that last party, and my returning to work, he was no longer the center of attention. He wasn't upset about leaving me, he never cared about me, he can't love. He was feeling the after affects of the NS build up and explosion of intense attention and admiration (from my family and myself).

I remember wondering how he could of told me he loved me, why he told me so often. It was to "secure" me. Did I finally belive that he loved me? would it take 500 I love u's or a 1000? or just 10? As SOON AS I BELIVED and TRUSTED he loved me the bottom fell out. But the bottom was always going to fall out, as every relationship he has had has gone the same way.

I began to catch on (but had no idea about narcs)My gut was screaming that something was going on. That he was lying. I actually said to him "are you sure you are being 100% honest with me?" I didn't need to find anything after that comment. I believe that comment alone broke the "false self" facade he had going on with me. He became deflated after I said that. Withdrew all affectinon. He was never the same person that he presented himself to be. It was downhill very fast.

I am just now understanding who is really is -his REAL self, so much after the fact. Learning who he is really is by my own judgement of him. I have always been a fair person. I am not perfect.

His true self is truely empty. I was an object to him, no different than a car or a sofa it seems. I served a purpose of supply and when I just scratched the surface of his lies it seems he folded into himself, never able to project the false self again with the same energy and vigor as when it started. If I was not totally inlove and enamored with the false self, buying each lie, then he just dissapeared.

I don't admire people that lie to me. I don't admire people that hurt me. There was no more supply if I was distrustful. Hence the importance from him to get me to trust him and believe in him.

So right...

When i read this i thought the same things... 'He was void, vacant, distant, cold, withdrew, withheld, silence'. Just make it 'she' and that's it.. exactly the same. Overnight. My gut was telling me, even in the early days, something isn't right. But I went along with it thinking perhaps its a phase, perhaps this, perhaps that, and then we start to doubt ourselfs - that's when we go 'nuts'. And then the relationship implodes. It will become 'sick' very quickly. We have to accept what has happened.. and that involves a process.

Great post

Deflated is a very good word you used to describe what happens when you blow their cover, and see their "real self", that as you described, is very accurate. "Void, vacant, distant, cold, empty". It is shocking when you get a glimpse of that. I have been there, and know exactly what you are talking about. You are a great writer, thank you for that awesome post.

this post was so helpful to me in expressing what has happened over the last 4 months, he really did become dark as you express so well, it happened so suddenly. It was so crazy making that I remember a month ago after a weeks D &D that I felt i was losing it. I remember grabbing him by the throat and saying "satan stop tormenting me." I swear his eyes become like black holes. Just hearing Briseis say that "she did not want to share this with anyone and she staggered around for weeks in a daze" made me realise how profoundly devastating this is. Im being gentler with myself today. thankyou for sharing this, we know the language of the Narc, we know this dark side and all of us wish we could have been spared this. love and light A

"That's not the real me"

The ex-Psych professor said that after the final D&D, and when I clinically explained all his actions to him. My therapist thinks the ex-P sounds like a fictional character, he was so over-the-top in his actions. (And during the D&D, the movie "The Faculty" was released, and it was about teachers being possessed by evil aliens that had taken over their bodies) The ex-P said "You don't appreciate my masks" and I let him know I did NOT. There's nothing more pathetic than a fake teacher. He saw being a teacher as merely being a role, not actually TEACHING. He wanted the goodies that came with teaching, not the responsibilities. Sorta like driving without a license. One of my friends said that the ex-P reminded her of Woody Allen's character in "Deconstructing Harry." She said that the difference between the ex-P is that I see life as living, and he saw life as art. Hence, his dramatic actions. He wanted soap opera;I wanted reality.

I want to second what Briseis said, you did say it well and took many of the feelings I had right out of my mouth for my EXN, I loved the man I first met, we had so much going for us, great sex, lots of interests we enjoyed, a high comfort level together, and then after 15 years when I wrote him a letter ask why the relationship is always about his wants/needs, and what about me, it all went downhill from there, he did not want me to visit him in another state, we had talked about our moving together, would not help pay for my flight, even half i asked for, certainly reasonable, he became mean .ugly, sort of like a monster emerging from a cave. Then the hateful letters when i said he may want to revisit his relationship with his mother ,as it might have play out with the important women in his life. HE got even more hateful and more ugly names were thrown at me and accused me of cheating on him when we were together, wrong, we had broken up, said I was offering free sex on the internet, first come, first served, that is a FUNNY one, shows you he NEVER knew me, I was an object plain and simple, an extension of who he is. I hope he just rots and goes away.... he lost the LAST woman who will ever love him, good riddance. When that fake facade they live with comes off, watch out, the ugly REAL person emerges and I am not talking about a butterfly!!!

Wow! You hit the nail on the head. Even though we understand it. Why does it still feel so bad???

You know that it was a hammer that just hit you in the head, but it still hurts because you were HIT. Even knowing the whole thing (on his part) was a sham, that he couldn't love or have a real relationship doesn't mean we can just say "oh well". OUR part was real. That's why we hurt. It's a righteous hurt, and it deserves it's time and respect.

This is beautifully said. I

This is beautifully said. I agree with Michelle. You GET IT. That False Self is such a dangerous thing. It morphs into what they know you WANT it to be. They pick up on your deepest longings, and make them into the False Self. Soooo dangerous. My Narc was extremely common in that he let that False Self collapse the moment he knew he "had" me. The thing that replaced that beautiful man was a living nightmare. I stumbled around in shock for weeks. Shock. My friends even noticed it and I was trying HARD to hide it. It's not something I wanted to share.

You just described it all perfectly. I don't think the experience of loving a narc has been different for any of us. The details might change, but the bigger picture remains the same. Journey on...
