The bridge

Hi all!

My counselor gave me a great story to relate to my relationship with SH. I don't recall all of her details, but it basically went something like this...

You and SH are on a bridge, in the middle of it. You walked hand in hand to the bridge and decided to cross over to the other side. Half way across, your SH, still holding your hand, fell and was hanging off the bridge. You were the only thing keeping him from falling. You both got stuck right there. You desperately wanted to pull him up but he did absolutely nothing to help himself try to get back up on the bridge. You did nothing to cause him to fall, and you have tried everything you could to get him back up. It became clear after two years of effort on your part and none on his that right there was where he was going to stay. You could no longer be happy stuck in the middle of that bridge holding him up all by yourself.

She told me that I would ultimately have to make a choice or one would be made for me, like his dead weight would finally pull me under, or let go and save myself.

I chewed on that for months. I did feel stuck. We only get so far in our relations with these diseased persons and they stop....

After offering all the help I could muster, and him wanting nothing to do with "forward progress" and lying, sneaking around with OW, I finally knew I had to make the decision for both of us, because he never would. He would talk a good game, but he hung there as dead weight just the same.

I had to let him go because I was going to kill myself trying to save someone who had no intention of saving himself.

So I let go...ie, NC. Sure he will pout and through the usual tantrums, but I was freeing myself. I learned it was time for it to be about me.

I am now 4 days in to the NC.

Thank you for that story, it touched my heart as I am still struggling with my past with the N and still think about him everyday, altough I am now on day 5 with NC, thanks to this site, it really opened my eyes to what we are all suffering. Up to a year ago I knew nothing about N , I just thought I was going crazy, because thats what my N told me all the time and I had no one to talk to. He made himself look so good in front of his family and his friends, they all looked at me as being the control freak, the nag, the one that was at fault for it all. I finally left him for good this time on March 7th and have been in treatment since. I live far away from my N and my children are greatful that I left him as they wanted little more to do with me, because I kept going back to him for some more of the same. Each time I left and came back he upped the ante and it got worse and worse. He too is one that won't help himself, he is still hanging on his bridge. The OW has now moved in with him and God help her, she is a victim too. Still praying for him, thats all I can do.... Stillstronginspiteofhim.... Blessings to all of you on here, I read your blogs and it gives me hope that one day I will be completely healed and free....

that is a great analogy, I remember reading a book called Get Rid of Him, and she said of an episode where the woman went to the therapist and the therapist said to her, it is your money or your life, she went for her life, and the creep got half her earnings...

your therapist is a good one...this is the best example i have heard....no matter how i tried to help narc or what i said or done....i was doing it all my own.....i said to him once, you will stay in the gutter..you are too lazy and spinless to even try.....what a long pointless haul it is with them...no wonder when i went to bed at night[after a day with him]i sometimes slept for 10/12 solid hours he so drained me....i then recharged my batteries and went back for more....lol..congrats on 4days nc...thays 4 days you havent tried to have to save him falling of the bridgexx

Middle...looking down

The bridge story hit home. I too am 4 days NC. Everytime I find myself looking down and telling myself I can't let go, I've been coming here. Everytime I start to doubt, I come here. Today tears have flowed...but they taste different somehow. I'm angry! I'm finally truly angry!! Angry at him but also angry at me for letting this happen. For ignoring my gut. For making excuses. For defending him. For protecting him. He told me in the beginning..but why did I emotionally say "oh yea? Bring it!" am I that arrogant that I thought if I loved him enough, he'd pull himself back up onto the bridge? And, yes, I miss him!!! It's not logical!!!

We each are at four! I'm in it every step of the way with you. Tears are your mind's way of cleansing yourself! Let them flow. I miss my N before he became the SH. I don't miss SH at all. I also believe there is someone who wont make me have to choose, my sanity or him... Hugs! Coffee

SBC and Imprisoned,

OUTSTANDING WORK! SBC, thank you for sharing your therapist's analogy. See how it has helped others? That is so fantastic. It is fantastic that you are processing it and OWNING IT!! Same for you Imprisoned. You will break free as you put each hour of NC behind you. You both are at a tough stage, Imprisoned nothing's logical yet but at least you see it's not. Same with you SBC. There is a saying "He who knows he is a fool is not the biggest fool. He who knows he is confused is not in the worst confusion"--Chuang -Tzu. It makes sense, doesn't it? At least you know you need to change it up to quit being in the "worst confusion." That is HUGE! You both should feel very good about that. Keep choosing YOU. Both of your precious lives and most precious of all **time** is too valuable to waste on chaos, confusion and disorder. I promise you this very difficult journey will be so worth it because you are committed to making it to the light. We are here to help. Keep coming here instead of "going there." GREAT WORK!!!! Kudos to you both. Most sincerely, (not) spinning. I REJECT ALL CHAOS AND DESTRUCTION. THE SICK FREAK BELONGS IN A ZOO AND NOT IN MY HEAD.
