All Borderline PD are Narcissists

I spoke to the author of this very helpful website today and she explained to me that all individuals with BPD are narcissists but not all Narcissists have BPD. My former boyfriend definetly seems to be a BPD.

NPD and BPD

"Narcissism" basically means "deeply self centered, self-focused, self preoccupied". People with any personality disorder is by default narcissistic. They don't outgrow the natural self-centeredness of young children because of their brain defect or whatever it is that causes PDs. I think it is this kind of thing that has the psychiatrists getting rid of Narcissistic Personality Disorder in the new DSM manual. It is inherent in all PDs. Even if they get rid of NPD altogether, it doesn't stop DESCRIBING our relationships and the trauma that happened because of them. Most of us aren't working with any formal diagnoses anyway. Probably a lot of our Narcs either wouldn't fit the diagnostic criteria or would be diagnosed with some other PD. No two psychiatrists always agree on PD diagnoses. What matters is the "syndrome" of how we are treated, and how we respond and need to heal after the real trauma of being involved with these individuals :)

Co-morbidity is high amongst the PD's

Npd, Bpd, Hpd and Aspd used to be grouped under cluster B on the DSMiv. They structure it all differently now because there are just so many traits that are co-morbid. From what I have learned about all 10 PD's they all share certain common traits - lack of empathy for other's feelings is a biggie. Each PD could probably tick boxes in the criteria for the other PD's but the one with the most boxes ticked will be where the diagnosis lies. I have heard many of those in relationship to Bpd's mention antisocial, narcissistic and histrionic traits to be present too. The interesting thing is that Cptsd which is most likely suffered by victims of PD relationships shares some common traits with Bpd too - abandonment fear and in some cases self-harm, this apparently has led to some being misdiagnosed with Bpd. The whole area needs a lot more research and attention from mental health professionals imo. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "The deeper that sadness carves into your being, the more joy you can contain." ~ Kahlil Gibran "That which we do not confront in ourselves we meet as fate" ~ Carl Jung http://www.storyofmylife.com/KLARITY4
