About looking at the N's web activity.

I just wanted to say that when I peeked it was in a very roundabout way, and it was very difficult and too time consuming to do again.
It proved 2 things to me, one; he really is a narc.
and two; he still had a hold on me.

Please read..
It is because of my exN (was a current at the time) I learned a lot about tracking via internet. He tracked me.
Many profiles (not the ones here though, I checked:) on social sites can be embedded with trackers. If they care to do the homework, they can see if you visited their page.
Don't feed the narcs!!! Don't let them sit back smugly and say, "haha, still got that one hooked" and if you think your narc isn't tech savvy enough to implement a tracker, does he have a friend geek who would or could?

I do believe the internet should be somewhat transparent, unfortunately it is rife with bullies, stalkers, narcs, and various other abusers of technology.

To me, my IP is like my phone number, if I want to give it to someone I can, if I don't want to then I don't have to.If I can't access their page/profile/site without giving the info, then it is my choice, if I feel it is a trustworthy site, or I want in that badly, I will freely give the info.
I don't wish to hide my identity for the most part, but to be able to keep stalkers from finding you is different.
I don't care if law enforcement tracks me, ( I have nothing to hide) but if XXX across the ocean wants my IP he should only get it if I permit.

Please be careful.

Perhaps the recent changes made to F/B

Are preventing trackers. I don't go to F/B, all of my personal friends are people I stay in contact with in person. It isn't just F/B though. It is any site just about that gives the user control. Am so frustrated now... I can NOT name the site my ex N uses the tracker on because it is too restrictive and it could clue him to my identity on here. I just can't take that chance. Also, if you use IM of any kind, it is easy to track your IP on it. (start, run, cmd, netstat, then depending on what you're looking for, IP, name of computer etc, there are different commands to enter.) But the only way they can do that is if you are connected to them at the time, and if you are behind a proxy, they can only trace the proxy. This is how my N got into mine. But I do know he has a tracker on his page on a site I used to enjoy. Sigh, next time, before I post I will try to have more up to date info. But please, they are out there.

VERY interesting and thanks

VERY interesting and thanks for posting this. Can I install/add something to my facebook page to see if he has been looking at my profile FB page also? I just set it to private based on what I read here, but curious on how this is done.

Not that I am aware of...

My ex N tracked mine through a guy he knows who is a geek. Recently they have been good at blocking trackers. However, they can't block them all. And the other unfortunate thing is that like gun control, (if they disallowed guns period, the criminals would still get them.) the stalkers always seem to figure it out first. (how to use these) Not the people who need protection. LOL, I opened my big mouth. Looks like I need to do some studying and back up with resources. Also, if you truly are concerned you can always contact the site administrators, and if he shows on your page often that will raise a red flag to them. And yes, from there you can contact law enforcement with the info. *hugs*

As far as I know...

...you can not track on FB. All of those apps you see people posting stating they can see who views their page are false. https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=212776147614

aha!!

Thank you from one frog to another!!! Maybe he fooled me? Maybe I've turned into a paranoid amphibean:( Well, not really, cause he got mine from IM'ing, and from the site he frequents (Not F/B) Well, he has a fb page too, but I didn't go there. Perhaps it is me who just presumed it could be done anywhere since the above mentioned avenues worked. Anyway, on this particular site they allow trackers. They simply ask that they be made visible. Not all are but... one page I went on, said "You use windows XXX (except it named specifically my pc's operating system) and your location is XXX and it named my hometown!!! The problem is, though they are visible, you don't know it is there until you enter the page. My concern is that I know it can be done, and if someone finds a loophole it will be exploited, and I don't wish for any of our ex N's to sit back and gloat and think they still have us hooked. Just be careful. *hugs*

Check out

IP trackers (google it) Static IP, Dynamic IP. I thought about using a proxy, but, your information is not ever guaranteed safe through a proxy. Keep in mind too. Your internet activities can be traced easily, and though it usually morbid curiosity to us, ex N can say you are stalking him and use the info if it happens enough to constitute stalking. *hugs*

Any technical resource you could steer me to on this topic is much appreciated. I have a private IP, but I am curious what/how where I go can be tracked and traced. How did you check whether this site was embedded with a tracker?

Geezz, don't I feel ..

LOL, just google it seriously,it will give you all kinds of resources. Also, I was traced through my AIM account (by going to run cmd and entering some tech babble it can be done through your start menu on your pc if you have an open connection with the person at the time) Also, all websites, or almost all, have trackers, that is not a concern, they are simply for monitoring traffic, and mostly ignored. THE BIG DIFFERENCE IS this website won't allow you to put a tracker in your profile page. LOL, you can figure that out by trying to do it. (I wouldn't suggest that cause then you are breaking policy) Or you can figure it out by checking out their policies. Also right click/ then view source will show (in a bunch of code/internet language) that tracking is disabled. Many profiles, such as FB, and other places can have embedded invisible trackers though. I learned a lot during my ordeal...

Thanks. I'm pretty tech savvy, actually. Googling it DOES pull up a lot of info, a lot of which is incorrect or not current. (For instance, Facebook - supposedly - prohibits embedded tracking code as part of their privacy policy.) I'll keep digging though. I'm trying to stay up to date on the tracking programs out there, which are changing all the time. Mobile technology passes different info as well, which is a whole other can of worms.

If you find any info

that is current, please let me know, many of these sites do try to prevent tracking, but it is hard to monitor when technology moves so quickly, and with so many users too. I just stay away from mine now (my ex N) cause I figure I just don't want to have to track down what the most recent spyware/ trackware is. I'd rather just live free, and be open about my net activities. Also my tech savviness isn't info I retain easily, it is a learn as I need, then I forget. LOL, am the same way with math. Good luck to you. *hugs*

I agree - it's draining for me, too! I need a cheat sheet! In all my laziness, I was hoping you had a good resource for one. ;) I want to live free and open, too. But I work with a lot of women who are involved in dangerous relationships. For that reason, I'm very protective of my privacy. You can never be too careful. If I find a good cheat sheet (or get the gumption to put one together) I'll definitely send it to you. Happy Wednesday!

Self preservation

Is the reason I started learning. I didn't give a thought to someone else needing the info. :( I will be researching as well. Thanks :)

Oh, and...

Please don't feel the need to comment unless you want to, I just wanted to put this out there as a cautionary thing to help us all make better decisions about how to handle our recovery. Thanks and hugs.

Run a scan

On your computer. If you have cookies or spyware, most antivirus programs will detect and eliminate them. If you don't have an antivirus program, try AVG or one of the free ones offered online. After all cookies (which track) are eliminated, don't go back to any page he has control of the profile. You will often get cookies from various sites you visit. Most cookies are good. They simply help you get to the pages you want to quicker and help bring up relevant pages when you are looking for somethin. I like cookies.:) But stay away from his cookies!!! LOL, don't believe I just typed that... Much luck. Just stay away from him and you'll be fine. Think of trackers as antabuse for recovering alcoholics. It helps you stay away from the drug.

His cookies

Don't go to his profile. Trackers are also referred to as cookies. Stay away from his profile and you avoid His cookies. :)

The only thing I am saying

Don't visit their page, if they have a embedded tracker they will know you were there. And that feeds them... it actually has been helpful to me, I don't want mine to know I am the slightest bit curious, and I do know he has trackers on every profile he can put them on. *hugs*
