Getting stood up?

OK, here's the story:

I met this guy on a dating site a few days ago. We emailed a few times then went onto texting. Yesterday he said he was going to call me, twice, but he ended up texting me instead - no call. Last night we make plans to meet tonight & lets just say that the texting got a little racy. (Bad idea, I know!) So today I ask him if he's just looking for the FWB thing & tell him that I ask because THAT is not what I'm looking for. He says "no, I want a real relationship." OK, so far so good, right?

Anyway, so he texts me this morning & says that he'll call me when he's done with his yard work & whatever. This time he actually calls, which was around 5:30 p.m EDT. So we talk for a while & then he asks me if I still want him to come over tonight? WHAT??? I never said I wanted him to come over. Seriously dude, you think you're coming over to my place for our first date??? So I tell him that I'd rather meet in a public place for our first meeting - either a coffee shop or for a drink somewhere. He agrees & tells me that he's going to take a shower, then grab some dinner & will call me back to make plans. That was over 2 1/2 hours ago!

I'm being stood up, right? And is anyone here feeling the same way I am, which is that this guy is probably just looking for one thing? Funny how he was right there when he thought he was invited to my place, but now that I told him I'd rather meet in public somewhere, he seems to have disappeared. UGH!!! I changed my clothes, did my hair, put on a face (make-up), perfume, etc. for nothing? Lovely. :( OH well, he was probably a Narc anyway.

Yep, so true Ideal. And right about now he's looking pretty "yellow" to me. He apologized, of course, and told me to let him know if I would like to still meet him for that date. So here's me, being a little cocky about my psychic abilities & sent him an email asking him if his last name is Burke or Burns, because that's what I'm feeling. And it wasn't all that difficult to figure out because I know his last name probably starts with the letter B. This was obvious by the nickname he chose on the dating site. Once I had the B, the ur** seemed to come right through to me. Anyway, since I asked him this question, I haven't heard a thing back from him. Awwww, is Narc boy scared of the psychic? HAHAHA! I also figured out another guy is actually 53, not 48 as he stated on his profile. He admitted the lie, but is stumped as to how on earth I knew his real age. I think I missed my calling in life & should've been a private investigator. Between my knack for research/investigation and my slight psychic abilities, I think I'd be really good at it. :) Love & Light! ♥

I think much along your lines and prefer to meet for coffee after a few emails because as you said it is imperative to meet and see if there is any connection, not just endless emails, it is terribly discouraging, I have been on the internet for some time trying to meet a decent man and so far, no luck, I have never seen so many losers or men with no character and integrity and yet they think they are Gods!????I wish i could meet someone the old fashion way.for me that is the biggest reason it has been so slow for me to recover from the Narc, but I am doing so, if for no reason then the passage of time.

Thanks

Thanks everyone! There is a method to my madness. It's not that I'm desperate, or needy, or lonely that causes me to want to quickly meet someone after I start emailing w/them on a dating site - it's simply that I've done the never ending email stuff before & know that this is not good either. You end up emailing, texting and/or talking on the phone for weeks, then when you finally decide to meet each other in person, there may or may not be chemistry between you. Both parties seem to build up these huge expectations, only to be let down in the end. So rather than waste a lot of time on this stuff, I tend to go rather quickly - moving on from emails, to texting, to calls, then arrange a meeting shortly thereafter. Because really, there's no way to tell if you're going to feel chemistry with this person until you meet in person. And I ALWAYS let the guy bring up the subject of meeting. If he doesn't bring it up rather quickly, and prefers to keep it to superficial contact methods, I quietly disappear. Therefore, my feeling is, might as well get it over with. However, it seems to have backfired in my face this time. Never again with the racy texts, I WILL say that! I'm sure that didn't make me look good & I feel like THAT was my biggest mistake w/this guy. I'm done now - as some of you said, I'm not going to waste another thought on him. Thanks again for your nice comments and helpful advice. I really appreciate your support. Love & light! ♥

Hi Cougar

Online dating is tough, huh? I had the very same issues as you mention. You don't want to end up in a virtual relationship based only on email and text, yet you don't want to meet someone before you're comfortable. Trying to find the balance between the two is tricky. For what it's worth, I think you're doing just fine. In my experience, there are a lot of undateable men on those sites. You really do have to weed through a lot of bs. Just keep that red flag radar running, and you'll be alright.

YES, online dating IS tough! Finding that balance IS very tricky. It seems "kissing frogs" from these sites is common & I have yet to find my Prince Charming. LOL Thanks for your words of support & encouragement. ♥

This guy is looking for sex and that is it

Cougar baby, We tend to complicate things. This man is looking for sex, pure and simple. Go N/C and don't respond. He is a playa, they all say they want a relationship, its all crap. Watch the actions. That's all you need to know. Sorry you met another creep, you deserve so much better. Don't waste 5 seconds of your precious time with this joker you are worthy of the real deal!!! I think we all have different ways of approaching dating espically on the internet, for me, what works is a few emails and then i will suggest meeting for coffee at a public place and they will have to come to my town, I do not to go driving all over like i would have in the past. I am just not in to endless emails which really tell you nothing about a person, meeting is the only way, but a simple meet so you can escape, like I had to with the guy who would not shut up!I am not in to playing games, like hard to get nor am I desperate, both extremes in my book.

First: The conclusion...yes, you were stood up; however, I have some other things I'd like to add... Now, I am a bit conservative so again you can take what applies and leave the rest...but under the circumstances and what you've been though...like all of us...I think a bit of discernment is in order. First - you know the rep of online dating...so yes, that in and of itself you already know the odds... BUT...you said: I met this guy on a dating site a few days ago. We emailed a few times then went onto texting. And just based on that Cougar was all ready to meet this guy for coffee...a VIRTUAL stranger...who may have given "good text" but could be Jack the Ripper or Stripper! Why so soon? AND what message do you think most men will get about anyone who is so quick to meet up for coffee?...Look I'm not saying don the nun costume...but men do like a chase and they can smell despration a mile away...you have to play hard to get...don't jump at the first invite and don't be the one to make the first invite...make him sweat make him work...that will be a good first indicator EVEN though we also know these narcs and egos like a chase and you still could be at risk...make the "mutha" sweat a little. Yesterday he said he was going to call me, twice, but he ended up texting me instead - no call. And you set the boundary by.....? Which gave him what message? Who is training who here? Last night we make plans to meet tonight Because bad behavior by not calling and texting instead is rewarded by making plans...NO Cougar...NO! AND I'm saying this with love... Lets just say that the texting got a little racy. So soon he's "familiar" and we enabled and accepted this behavior then we wonder "why?"...No! Train 'em well! (Bad idea, I know!) okay...I know you know now...;) So today I ask him if he's just looking for the FWB thing & tell him that I ask because THAT is not what I'm looking for. And of course we know that they will tell the truth...right?...NO! NO! NO! remember...we watch actions...words are nothing! Three clues RED FLAGS and you were still willing to go at it...NO! He says "no, I want a real relationship." OK, so far so good, right? Cougar?! Anyway, so he texts me this morning & says that he'll call me when he's done with his yard work & whatever. "Why bother calling - she's accepting the crumbs?" This time he actually calls, which was around 5:30 p.m EDT. Oh my, how lucky! So we talk for a while & then he asks me if I still want him to come over tonight? WHAT??? GAMER...PLAYER...and has it down to a science we can tell from this scenario.... I never said I wanted him to come over. Seriously dude, you think you're coming over to my place for our first date??? YUP that's exactly what he thought because you gave him no indication he should think otherwise - AND I will say in his defense...*don't start throwing tomatoes yet* THAT men in general are dogs by nature unless and until they are trained properly. We are animals, we have needs, they are instinctual and men will try to get away with whatever they can unless they feel that it is worth it to step up their game...if they are single, anything with two legs and an orifice is free game. That is not to say that this same man, trained properly and feels you carry yourself with value will not respect you but initially it's all a test... So I tell him that I'd rather meet in a public place for our first meeting - either a coffee shop or for a drink somewhere. He agrees & tells me that he's going to take a shower, then grab some dinner & will call me back to make plans. That was over 2 1/2 hours ago! Maybe he slipped in the tub?...we can only hope...God forgive me... I'm being stood up, right? Maybe his hamster had a life threatening emergency...things happen...maybe he'll text ya later...grrrr what a jerk! I'm so sorry but you my dear also have to step up your game if you're gonna play. And is anyone here feeling the same way I am, which is that this guy is probably just looking for one thing? Like I said above...we must always assume that is all they are looking for unless proven otherwise which is proven by OUR boundaries and how capable they are of respecting them. Funny how he was right there when he thought he was invited to my place, but now that I told him I'd rather meet in public somewhere, he seems to have disappeared. UGH!!! Well, at least you were saved from a pending disaster... I changed my clothes, did my hair, put on a face (make-up), perfume, etc. for nothing? Lovely. :( OH well, he was probably a Narc anyway. I hope you went out anyway... Hugs!

Thanks Michelle & Ally

You're right Michelle. I played this ALL WRONG right from jump. Just like you said, I didn't make him work hard enough, agreed to meet him too soon, didn't set a boundary when he texted me instead of calling. I agree with it all. Funny thing is, it's not really so much that I'm desperate, because I don't believe I am. It's just that he seemed like such a nice, down-to-earth, sincere kind of guy. But I know, I listen too much to what they say instead of watching their actions. Lesson learned: next time I will stick to the online only stuff for a bit longer. I will make him WAIT for a while before agreeing to meet him. No racy texting at all! And I will set boundaries if he tells me he's going to call but texts me instead, or any similar thing. I realize you say it all with love & I thank you so much! Next time I'll know better. ♥

Thats all any of us can do...

And no, perhaps my choice of words were a bit hmmmm...oh heck...harsh...let me clean it up...I'm sorry if I came down like gang busters... I think we as women because we come from a good place in the heart, are open and don't present with a "tuffness" so to speak. That is not to say I am advocating playing..."BITCH" but finding that balance...a "shrewdness" so to speak...a keeping them guessing. I think for MEN, while we are being open and bright, and innocent, and sunshiney, just trying to be open...most of them say like big bad wolves....AHAAAA a "live one" and to them this translates into "desperate" does not have to be the reality...its how they process... So shrewd...the goal is sweat beads...LOL To be honest...this part of the game really really frustrates me...I wish I could just be my normal nice self, and be open, and all that...but the nature and the rules of the game demand that we don't do that...in fact, it was that strategy that got me entangled with the narc...and not that all men are narcs...but I do believe most men, for ego's sake it is their nature...they are "hunters" they want to feel they have to chase a little...it's just how they're made I've come to believe. Equally I do believe that the right man, could be loving and you can mutually master the art of having eachother eating out of eachoter's hands...but it takes time and patience and a lot of selectiveness until you find the right one... Moreover, as "sisters" in recovery, I hope we all do come away from this empowered, but not hating men because of a few bad apples along the way... Ahhh, gotta go for a ciggy run... Hugs!

Narcs want to be pursued...

After the final D&D, a friend of mine made the observation that the ex-Psych prof wanted to be chased, he didn't want to do the pursuing. "They are 'hunters'"-He was a hunter, in a passive-aggressive way. A NORMAL guy, if he's interested, does the pursuing. The ex-P wanted ME to be the "man" in the relationship-the one to call him, initiate meetings, he wanted his girlfriend&I to fight each other over him so he wouldn't have to do the deciding! *I* was the one who did most of the calling (except for his crank calls) He had ZERO initiative and believed in passivity. He didn't like competing with other men... he was angry when I was dating. Of course, he didn't tell me. A NORMAL man would've said "I'm interested in dating you","I'm not interested" or "I already have a girlfriend." The ex-P didn't do that. Ns/Ps are LAZY. They're predatory, yes, but they don't want to work. They'd rather pursue the weak, go after vulnerabilities, than be the men who do the pursuit&the hard work.

I have some bad news the guy was after sex and it does not sound like much else, oh did I say sex, finding any decent guys on the internet, I recently moved and had 2 horrible blind dates, emailed first, all that and met both at a bookstore. first nothing, he seemed needy and no physcial attraction, second, a big belly, for ma big turnoff and would NOT stop talking, i am very serious, he went on about his second wife taking him for everything and how he had different lawyers and one had alcohol on his breathe and on and on, I had to get up and leave,I could not get one word in edgewise and he cared nothing about me, asked me not one question, it is very depressing, what can i say, i was never so happy to be back to my own place after the last one!!!If you find a good guy let me now, I will be real happy so many all they want is sex or a statue they can talk to!for me the first date they come to my town and we do coffee in the afternoon, nothing else.

...Onwithmylife. Nice to have this confirmed. At 8:25, 3 hours after he tells me he's just going to take a shower & grab some dinner, I get a TEXT, not a call, stating that he "got tied up" and asking me if we can meet tomorrow night instead. Can you believe? That's 4 red flags in about 2-3 days. I have a 5 red flag rule, which has JUST been reduced to 4. All set with him. NEXT!
