THE MAN IN THE GLASS

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.
For it isn't your father or mother or wife
Who judgement upon you must pass;
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.
Some people may think your a straight-shootin' chum
And call you a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.
He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear up to the end.
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.
You may fool the whole world down the pathway of life
And get pats on your back as you pass.
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the man in the glass.

For those of us who have faith they WILL face their judgement day, and for those like myself who have lost their faith along the way I believe they live their entire lives cheating themselves and others their inner hell is right here on earth.

How cool

this is one of my all-time favorite poems...... I first came across it in college (many, many years ago) I can't recall the author's name at the moment. Funny how it makes even more sense, the older and hopefully wiser I get. But I have to agree with the others--it will never make sense to a narc. They simply can't face their own reflection, it's all about external validation for them.

Man in the Mirror

Ns/Ps are experts at projection. They can't bear certain aspects of themselves, so they project it onto others. This poem made me think of Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror."

I know you are all right

I agree what everyone commented on, I guess I posted it mainly for us so, they would NEVER in a million years relate to such a poem, but the poem is exactly what they are, going through life fooling others when in the end they are only fooling themselves, we see it but they never will I know, oh and I almost forgot they will never care because they dont have a conscience.

Narcissus

In the myth, Narcissus was enamored of his own reflection-he loved the Man in the Glass (or in his case, the Man in the Water) so much so he neglected himself and died. It's bizarre. Narcs/Psychs love their own reflections, yet they're incapable of introspection. They love their images, their False Selves.

this works on normal people.

this works on normal people. But Narcs dont self examine, they dont look at themselves in the eye. They dont consider others, it is exactly this that deferentiates them from the rest of us. So as such as great as this poem is. IT IS USELESS TO A NARC.

foolednolonger

you are right about the poem a clever ditty, but one that NARCS do not recognize, so many letters I sent to the man telling him to LOOK INWARD, I might as well have been speaking Greek, he never got the picture, ever....................

I agree with fooled no

I agree with fooled no longer, this would be completely wasted on a narc. A good concept for a rational human being though.
