Personality Disordered Individuals (PDIs)

I've been doing a lot of research lately for purposes of the new website and recovery book. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), there are 10 Personality Disorders. Mental health professionals group these personality disorders into one of three clusters based on similar characteristics.

Guess what they all have in common with one another? All Personality Disordered Invdividuals (PDIs) are:

MANIPULATIVE
CONTROLLING
SELFISH

They seek out relationships in order to use people to meet their own needs. Nothing more, but certainly nothing less.

For example, people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) use people in relationships in order to ensure their ego is always stroked. People with Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD) use people in relationships in order to obtain material things (i.e. money) from them.

Below is a brief summary of all 10 Personality Disorders according to the DSM-IV published by the APA:

Cluster A (odd or eccentric disorders)
1) Paranoid Personality Disorder: characterized by irrational suspicions and mistrust of others.

2) Schizoid Personality Disorder: lack of interest in social relationships, seeing no point in sharing time with others, anhedonia, introspection.

3) Schizotypal Personality Disorder: characterized by odd behavior or thinking.

Cluster B (dramatic, emotional or erratic disorders)
4) Antisocial Personality Disorder: a pervasive disregard for the law and the rights of others.

5) Borderline Personality Disorder: extreme "black and white" thinking, instability in relationships, self-image, identity and behavior.

6) Histrionic Personality Disorder: pervasive attention-seeking behavior including inappropriate sexual seductiveness and shallow or exaggerated emotions.

7) Narcissistic Personality Disorder: a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and a lack of empathy.

Cluster C (anxious or fearful disorders)
8) Avoidant Personality Disorder: social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, extreme sensitivity to negative evaluation and avoidance of social interaction.

9) Dependent Personality Disorder: pervasive psychological dependence on other people.

10) Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder: characterized by rigid conformity to rules, moral codes and excessive orderliness (not the same as obsessive-compulsive disorder).

onwithmylife,

thanks Lisa for putting all the disorders on the website, makes you look at them and realize these men are seldom just one, by looking I would say the EXN was NPD, paranoid, for sure with a touch of borderline, he always looked at everything as black or white while i would vainly try to explain many areas of life are in grey, no it was always right or wrong. I once asked him if he would rather be right or happy, I think this is a great insightful question, he immediately, without any thought, said right, that explains now the MISERABLE,LONELY life he now leads........................

I've been related or dated them all!!!

and i can verify that there are certain traits that cross the board - lack of empathy is omnipresent amongst PD's! Thank goodness I am out of Oz and will never again take on board the topsy turvy world of a Pdi! Cluster B

I'm pretty well acquainted with the Cluster B group by now. It's interesting to note that in most cases, comorbid (or overlapping) disorders exist, but invariably these comorbid PD's are from the same Cluster group. Also, with Cluster B, the pain and suffering are invariably caused to those close to the 'sufferer' rather than the PDI themselves. It's also worth noting that Cluster B's are the rarest of PD's but account for a high percentage of the prison population.
