Narcissists in the News

Narcissists appear in the news every day. Below is a link to a story describing a very well-known person as a narcissist. What do you think?

Newsworthy?

I completely agree with you! I am sick and tired of the media reporting on the lives of people I have no reason to revere. I do not admire people who exhibit selfish, arrogant, and cruel behavior, nor do I want to hear about them every day. They set a horrible example for our youth. I long for the days when journalism involved real investigative reporting on topics that actually impact our world. Talking about politics at work or dinner is perceived as taboo, but analyzing Drew Peterson's relationship with his fiance is more socially acceptable. I just don't get it. You don't have to look far to observe narcissistic behavior on television. Reality television is flooded with it. The star of one of the most-watched television shows in America, Simon Cowell, acts like a complete narcissist. For some reason, our society finds his cruel and demeaning behavior entertaining. He rips apart the fragile psyches of teenagers and young adults with absolutely no remorse and we find this a pleasurable form of entertainment? Instead of being disgusted by it, we make it the number one show in America! Not only that, but we allow our youth to perceive the attainment of fame as the ultimate measure of success in life. It is this reinforcement of narcissism by society that continues to validate and encourage such behavior. Our youth consume celebrity gossip and watch entertainment news as if their lives depend on it. We all have been guilty of this at one time or another. It's hard to avoid seeing as how the news incorporates these stories into their daily headlines. I'm sorry, but when Paris Hilton is being interviewed by Larry King on CNN, something is definitely wrong. You can't go to the grocery store without being bombarded by headlines chronicling the lives of celebrities. We do not know these people, nor is it likely we will ever meet them, but for some reason we are fascinated with what they are wearing and who they are dating. Turn on ABC Monday nights to watch textbook narcissists flaunt themselves on a new reality show called "True Beauty." If you can stomach it, it's a fascinating study in human behavior. These narcissists actually believe that beauty has a scientific number. I'm not kidding. I initially thought the contestants were getting "punked" by ABC when they were told they were going to be evaluated and assigned a scientific number to determine their beauty. But no, ABC was serious. They brought a doctor on their show who has built his entire practice on the belief that everyone of us can be assigned a scientific number, which measures our beauty. He's even coming out with a book this spring called "What's Your Number." I can't believe ABC gave this guy a platform to promote himself and his book. If you missed this show and want to observe textbook narcissistic behavior live and in action, look for the "Celebrity Apprentice" coming out soon. This will be the ultimate competition of self-inflated, yet injured egos. Of course, I jest when I tell you to tune into this junk and only point it out to show you how our society breeds narcissism. The AP reported in an article on MSNBC's website, "Today's college students are more narcissistic and self-centered than their predecessors, according to a comprehensive new study by five psychologists who worry that the trend could be harmful to personal relationships and American society." It is my hope that by building awareness and exposing narcissistic behavior for what it is, people will begin losing interest and more importantly, recognize a narcissist before he/she is able to take advantage of you.

Delusional Blagojevich

Actually, the fact that Blagojevich creates his own world to live in is an indicator that he is a pathological narcissist. Narcisism is excessive self-love based on the ego. Narcissists do not live in reality. They create their own world to live in, which is exactly what Blago has done. Our society has been overtaken by pathological narcissism. America has suffered greatly at the hands of individuals who will most certainly go down as some of the most notorious narcissists in history. We can no longer afford to deny the fact that we live in an era of narcissism, where most people are out for themselves and have no regard for how their behavior impacts others. You've heard the saying, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely," right? Madoff is another example of a pathological narcissist headling our news today. Our true self is who we are when we feel whole, alive and most in touch with ourselves. The false self describes how we feel when we are egocentric, selfish, withholding, envious and critical. This describes the world of a narcissist. They project a false self and then create their own world or reality to live in. Think about it, how else do you think Blago gets up every day defending himself despite the insurmountable evidence against him? Not only that, but the guy goes on a "Media Tour" in the midst of it all. Another indicator or sign that someone is a pathological narcissist is their addiction to the limelight. They need to be in the spotlight at all times. It is like a drug to them. They cannot avoid it even when they should know better. Think about OJ Simpson. He missed the limelight so much that he wrote a book about how he would have killed his wife if he wanted to and how he would have done it. Sick and perverse, but this is the mind of a pathological narcissist. They don't care what kind of attention they get, as long as they get it. Like anything, narcissism falls on a spectrum. To the far right of this spectrum you will find the pathological narcisssist. They are ill, out of touch with reality and delusional. Herein lies Blago, OJ and many others who headline our news every day. It's important that we understand and recognize these people for who they really are.

Blagojevich - A Textbook Narcissist

When interviewed outside his home by local Chicago reporters after being impeached, Blago asks, "So, if I have something to say, will you still come out and cover me or is this the last hurrah?" Talk about your quintessential narcissist. Then he does a "media tour." Did you see him on Letterman? Textbook.
