The note

Firstly, this is my first post (hello) and thank you to all of you for your incredible words of wisdom and support and for your endless stream of experiences that mostly seem to relate back to many of my own. Over the past six months, you have got me through many low points and I have had many Ah, HA!! moments here.

I've not posted my story, but in a nutshell I've been no contact for four months, after being discarded for about the third or fourth time. In total, it's been around four years of an on-and-off nightmare, but only recently (this time around), realised the behaviour was narcissism.

I call my N a "nice narcissist", in a sense that he was never aggressive toward me (verbally and physically), instead switching on and off. Being there one moment, chasing, "light-stalking" as he called it...(I thought it was romantic at the time) then completely silent, unresponsive and like he never existed the next. All of his ex-girlfriends have been treated the same way, one of them remains his closest friend actually who has many drug addictions and who I'm convinced is one of his main sources of supply as he "helps" her constantly. He kept us very separate, in fact, he seemed to compartmentalise every part of his life and didn't much like being out in public or socialising with his girlfriend in groups or with his other friends. I guess he has a different mask for different groups.

I guess the reason that tonight, I'm feeling particularly low, is last Friday afternoon he returned a pair of shoes to my work (an expensive, $1,500 pair I had asked him to return/send to my work four months ago via text which he didn't respond to, so in my mind, I had let them go), with a note that made my skin crawl. Basically the same old, "I wanted to say sorry for being an arsehole over and over, plus I had to return your shoes. I was lucky to ever have gone out with someone as lovely and beautiful as you etc etc. That probably works...take care, N".

I can't believe after everything, this is what he says. And dropping my shoes off at work, four months after I asked, right before the weekend. And I can't figure out why he would even include a letter like that, particularly since it said so little, and was written so flippantly (from the man who used to pen me 10 page "beautiful" letters). I think it's a bit late for that. Still, I don't understand his motive. Maybe there isn't one. After all I have read and come to understand, I guess I still don't fully understand. Maybe he is trying to clear his conscious.

If someone has even one thought about what his, I would be so grateful for it.

I have not responded.

Love to all of you who may be feeling a little low tonight.
x

It’s called hoovering.

It’s called hoovering. Believe it or not, this was a hoovering attempt. Hung onto your shoes for control. Returned them …when HE felt like it, to maintain control. And dropped a note in there, to eff with your head. In hopes you’ll reply. DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MAN. Hoovering isn’t always about getting their ex’s to come back to them…it’s about getting their ex’s to give them supply again. Wear your shoes…and go dancing…with a GOOD man, lol. In all seriousness, it was a hoovering attempt. And it won’t be his last. You must ignore him though, and not give him an inch. For they take a mile…..always. Good luck to you, and praying for you to stay strong.

the nice narcissist

Wow this struck a chord with me. I think my ex was a 'nice narcissist'. Almost a fatherly figure in a way, seemed genuinely concerned with my wellbeing but never made an effort to progress the relationship and would just 'fade'. He had absolutely nothing to give and just took what he wanted then disappeared. And he used to say 'take care' a lot. Such an unemotional sign off... Whether he's a nice or nasty narc he still takes without giving. Indeed it took 4 lousy months to return your shoes, as if testing you for a reaction and when gave him none, he has decided to make a monumental effort in returning them with a stupid note. What a hero. Why can't they just be normal, love us without the conditions attached and say goodbye without the mixed messages. Oh that's right, they're not normal. They're nasty little scheming critters wasting our time. He wants a reaction from you and he's throwing you a few crumbs hoping you'll make it easy for him to worm his way back in. As with all narcs, their words are carefully crafted but it is their actions (or lack thereof) that prove their true character. You're doing great, don't contact him or start thinking he's a decent person who may have a conscience. You deserve someone who would be proud to take you everywhere and introduce you to all his friends / family etc. He's just playing you. Pearl

Throwing a few crumbs

Thanks Pearl. You're so right. I almost cried when I read your response. Tears of relief! Throwing a few crumbs. That struck a chord with me too. This time around, I guess if I'm honest, it's an ego thing. He is not chasing as intensely which is his usual hoovering technique, which, on top of everything else, is a stronger blow to the ego....even though i know in my heart IT'S THE BEST THING. The crumbs just feel a little crumbier this time around. He knows I wont give anymore, and all the grand gestures... he has already been played out in the past - there's nothing else left in his bag of tricks, so he resorts to returning the shoes. I guess you try over and over in your head to make sense of behavior which will never make sense because it's pathological, destructive to all of us who are closest and toxic. I guess the key now is trying to focusing more on myself. I've wasted so much energy on him, and not once has it been affirming, or supportive, or positive! Tomorrow is a new day. Wiser x
