KellyPMHNP-FNP-BC's story

Hi while I have just completed psych NP certification, such has given some insight into NPD. Would like insight from any aware of most common cognitive distortions utilized other than projection and reaction formation, used with NPD and individuals with Nar. traits.

Reason being is in regards to my son's dad whom just moved to town to "be closer to him", due to living a few hours away. While I commend him on this action, my 7 y/o whom was dxd with adhd-inattentive type earlier this year has lived with me 80 percent of time, Structure and maintaining school schedule is an utmost concern, while for his father he would like to have him 50/50.

He presented his cause with court room theatrics as to how all of his efforts of moving, uprooting his family would contribute to the civil decsion rendered from the court to go his favor(not surprised by his theatrics). While I reminded him one month ago when he informed me of the move it was to be closer attend more activities etc.

I was not getting anywhere when I mentioned the impact of structure and routine. However when I mentioned 'all or none thinking', I got a positive reaction, I discussed flexibility adaptability etc, taking one day at a time. It seemed to work, is that a common cognitive distortion used by the narcissist? Any recommendations on dealing with him?

Also the following background may help. A while back 1 1/2 yr ago, I tactfully confronted my son's dad in stating Narcisism was evident. I further stoodup to him and stated the bullying and threats needed to stop, as well as the constant questioning to my son as to what mommy was and was not doing, was leaving our child sad and confused.

Interestingly, my child's dad accepted this communication quite well and such has provoked enhanced well being within our child. Does it sound odd that when I called him on his bullying behavior, it stopped. Is that a common therapeutic modality used when dealing the Narcissist. Also when I noticed a change in behavior (less posturing)tonight when I discussed all or none thinking, regarding the 50/50 discussion. Does that sound odd?

Thanks
