Path Forward Book Club: Family Happiness

Here is the text for Leo Tolstoy's "Family Happiness." It's a short story. And when it comes to NPD, excerpts from "War and Peace" as well as "Anna Karenina" would be suitable.

"Family Happiness" has LOTS of elements that speak to our experience.

In Sergey's presence, the main character feels more like a daughter than an equal. She remembers her future husband making toys for her when she was a child. Early on, he makes a point of making her feel inferior to him.

At one point, the young wife thinks "is it a husband's right to humiliate&insult his innocent wife?" Tolstoy seems to think it's implicitly right to do so.

The story was inspired by an incident in Tolstoy's life. He was the guardian of a younger female ward. *SHE* rejected him because she found him too controlling. As some have commented, "Tolstoy's formula for family happiness made for an unhappy Mrs. Tolstoy."

This story is a tearjerker. And it does show the NPD in Sergey's case.

How to be a domestic goddess

Hugs!!!! Leo Tolstoy idealized marriage, romantic love&women... to the extent that it poisoned his real life relationships. In the first epilogue of "War and Peace",he speaks of how spouses should sacrifice their selfish desires for the sake of the family---yet he was more than willing to sacrifice his family for his "ideals." By the time he died, he was alienated from most of his children-except for his youngest child, who was at his side when he passed. He had cruelly rejected his family, betrayed his wife, all for the sake of a Christianity he invented. It's an idealism that destroys the good in life. Instead of appreciating&being grateful for having many children, a devoted wife-he had this unrealistic ideal.

A good article about Family Happiness

Tolstoy's view is that men should marry dolls-someone who's docile and passive. This is a GREAT essay--written by a MAN! http://lancemannion.typepad.com/lance_mannion/2005/03/tolstoy_on_marr.html/
