N's mom terminal, to go or send sympathy card?

Ok, so the entire time I've known him his mother had cancer. I have always asked about her and lent him a shoulder when he needed to talk about it. Last month she was found to have it spread all over and told she had weeks to months to live. I always told him I was praying for her and he was telling me how hard it was to see her suffer. I think this was his only genuine emotion he had, for his mother. He adores her and said she was a saint for putting up with his cheating loser of a father (apple doesn't fall far from the tree). Well, although I know going to the funeral home is out of the question at this point (always thought I'd be the one holding his hand there), I feel that if I don't even send a sympathy card when she passes any week now that is being as cruel as he is. Although, that would also be breaking no contact. What does one do in this situation? Just don't acknowledge it since to do so is breaking NC?
