Movies with Narcisistic characters?

Who`s in the mood for that? I`m sure I`ve seen dozens in my life, but I remember only some recently, and would lve if you participate with additions to the list! I`m a huge mvie fan in general, so I thought this would be fun.

I start with:

1. American Psycho - black comedy movie, Christian Bale portrays a metrosexual maniac who gets so crazy to perfectionism and self love, that he starts killing people as a thrill! Fabulous portrait of a Narc!

2. Everybody wants to be Italian - God, what a classic portrait of a Narcisist! The movie is sort of romantic comedy, but the character provockes such suffering and switches so much on the duration of the film, that you don`t know which is which!

3. Dangerous Liasons - John Malckovich, awesome movie, portrays a greedy Narcisist for power and conquests, stepping over peple`s feelings without remorse.

4. Cruel Intentions - Ryan Phillipe - yep, another one. Though the movie is enjoyable per total, his character is so avid for perfectionism and winning, that he deceives his own "feelings" as well.

5. The Dark Knight - Joker? More a Psychpath and a Narcisist, but neverthless, deserves to be in the list.

That`s much of what comes to my mind right now. Feel free to join the list!

The Witches of Eastwick -

The Witches of Eastwick - Jack Nicholson character, of course, who plays sort of a devil/Narc, who seduces three women, and then turns them against each other. Sort of black comedy, sf, but overal cool and fun to watch! And also shows, how he reacts, when they refuse to play his "games" anymore, exagerrated of course! Oh, and I almost forgot, it has some of the most "Narc" speeches ever like "Why did God created women? Why am I a mistake if I came from one?" - N talk.

I started watching Hangover

I started watching Hangover II lastnight. Zach Gilifianakis's character of Alan was embarrassingly like the pimp/NARC. It was very uncomfortable to watch as he treated everyone around him as servants, criticized everything his mother did for him. So CHILDISH. The pimp/NARC is almost exactly like Alan in the movie...infantile...over-stimulated...ego-centric...weird...rude...emotionally manipulative...socially awkward...over-reactive...inappropriate...out of control...maniacal...I'll stop now. UGH...I shut it off.

9 1/2 Weeks

Something possessed me to watch this yesterday afternoon. I remember really liking the movie when it came out in the late 80's, when I was in college. WHY?!?!?! John (Mickey Rourke when he was hot), the main character, was a somatic N. Liz (Kim Basinger), the woman, fell victim to all of his games/tests and she was obsessed with him. She finally left and the movie ended. I was so hoping that it would continue and they'd show the hoovering, push and pull of how it really is, that is doesn't really end like that. The whole time I was watching it, I was thinking about other movies of the same time period that I liked that had similar characters - Officer and a Gentleman, Against All Odds, The Thorn Birds, etc. Makes me wonder what role they played in setting up what I thought was desirable in a man. Or if I was drawn to them because of something that was already in me.

Really, Mickey Rourke

Really, Mickey Rourke definetly, in most of his films I believe! I like the last phrase you said "Or if I was drawn to them because of something that was already in me." - yeas, exactly, the same with me. Something that is, or something that isn`t in me..that is missing :) or the addiction core, you know? ExN said in one of his "hoovering" attempts and stuff, that is "a special lack of grace, I can see it in your face..there`s nothing you can do about". Interesting, right? Abandonment fears, lost kids, common wounds, addiction, people who "know" Pain instead of Love, you know what I mean, everything can attract these people. We have common wounds, both of these types weren`t "loved right", but the difference MAJOR difference, is that we don`t choose to inflict the pain that was inflicted onto us..or to exorcise our demonds on all the other human beings, who love us. Thanks for contributing to the list!

Venus

Peter O'Toole stars as an aging womanizer (Vanessa Redgrave stars as his ex-wife) He's become quite lonely, and Jodie Whittaker stars as his friend's niece who "comforts" him by drinking alcohol with him&doing sexual things for him (such as posing nude, he's no longer capable of sex) She provides him the ultimate, final NS. In the end, she abandons him to go partying with her young boyfriend&he dies alone. But she still gets his $$$ and gets praised at his funeral. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jii24hoM-_M

The dance with death of narcissism

One of my female Narc coworkers REALLY liked this movie, when it's really about mutual exploitation. The young niece uses Peter O'Toole's character for $$$, while he uses her to remind him of his now-extinct sex life (at one point, she sticks a finger in her lady parts&lets him lick it) It's an ugly cycle of enabling. It shows a partnership between two Narcs-albeit at different stages in life. O'Toole's character has become a cerebral Narc by default... he's impotent. The niece is a somatic Narc who loves sleeping around, drinking, living the life of the party. Some have praised this movie as showing platonic love between the generations. It's really about the ugliness of NPD.

can't forget

Season Greetings! We can't forget Jim Carrey's character in The Grinch Who Stole Christmas - its a great depiction eh? Cindy lou Who: "Santa, what's the meaning of Christmas?" The Grinch:"VENGEANCE! I mean... presents... I suppose The Grinch "The nerve of those Whos. Inviting me down there - and on such short notice. Even if I wanted to go my schedule wouldn't allow it. Four o'clock, wallow in self pity; 4:30, stare into the abyss; 5:00, solve world hunger, tell no one. 5:30, jazzercize. 6:30, dinner with me. I can't cancel that again. 7:00, wrestle with my self-loathing; I'm booked. Of course, if I bump the loathing to 9 I could still be done in time to lay in bed, stare at the ceiling and slip slowly into madness. But what would I wear?" except the part about the Grinch growing a heart, of course Belinda

"You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch"

I heard the Boris Karloff song from the original at work today. For some reason, I prefer the original Boris Karloff version. Karloff portrayed Frankenstein as a lovable monster-misunderstood, bullied, ostracized, not meaning harm to anyone.... it was Frankenstein's creator, Dr. Frankenstein, who was the Narc, thinking he could play God.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

It's a Cold War intrigue film. Gary Oldman stars as George Smiley, who heads the "Circus" (MI-5) and attacks people's weaknesses. In the John le Carre novels, Smiley is literally impotent. He is a cerebral Narc who coldly betrays and enjoys his power. His wife, the beautiful Lady Ann, is a somatic Narc who openly sleeps around. Colin Firth stars as a treacherous bisexual spy, who when the man doesn't show interest, goes for the wife instead. It's a story of tangled lies&betrayal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aco15ScXCwA

"To dream the impossible dream"

Miguel Cervantes' singular literary creation, Don Quixote of La Mancha, is the origin of our phrase "tilting at windmills" (to connote someone delusional) La Mancha is home of great Manchego cheese. Don Quixote is a voracious reader of romantic medieval tales, such as "Amadis de Gaul." (interestingly, the sequel to "Amadis de Gaul" was set in a fictional country called California) In "Don Quixote",the title character believes his own fantasies about being a knight errant, with his squire, Sancho Panza. Sancho tries to keep his master down to earth... it doesn't work. Don Quixote seeks out the unattainable beauty, Dulcinea. Don Quixote's self-absorbtion leads him into many comical misadventures.

Susan, Don Quixote charactr,

Susan, Don Quixote character, totally! Both books, movies..lives his life in fantasy roles, more than reality itself. Reminds me of another one, "Big Fish" by Tim Burton, the main character, totally self absorbed father..hough it`s a beautifully released film, I can`t help but identify with the son`s feelings, when the Dad`s fantasies, and "all-about-him-stories" overcome his own reality and those around him as well.. I don`t know if you or somebody else mentioned the movie "28 Days" with Sandra Bullock, but I`ve just seen it, and Lord I identified with her character many times, I`m a "mess" too in many ways, lol. And Jasper, her boyfriend, is totally classic Narc Case. Exactly the same type of fellow, I bursted into anger with, weeks ago..that movie is pretty awesome for anyone going through addiction in general, and pretty funny too!

Lightening McQueen from cars.

Lightening McQueen from cars. I have kids and watch this often and picked up on it right away. He has no friends and is a very egotisctical and selfish race car. However he CHANGES and learns a valuable lesson that life is not just a party of one. Disney has a way of inserting messages into their movies.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Spike and Buffy. Totally "Love the way you lie" kind of relationship, opposites, him the vampire monster, she the fighter for the good guys. I just started waching the show, and it`s great totally. Destructive relationship between those two, and Spike is totally a beast..reminds me of Sookie and Eric from True Blood. Aaalways ends bad..

Coriolanus

Like Jane Austen, this is classical. But from Shakespeare this time. Coriolanus is a psychopath. He's mother enmeshed. He loves war, and willingly betrays anyone. Shakespeare describes him as a "man of tears"-he's one of Shakespeare's more infantile characters. In one scene, Coriolanus is described as having enjoyed tearing apart butterflies as a child. In the recent movie version, Ralph Fiennes stars as Coriolanus, Gerard Butler as his enemy/ally, and Vanessa Redgrave as his controlling, powerful mother. Ralph Fiennes directed this version, so it should be good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsYrGIQnmxo

Emma (1996)

One of the taglines goes "Emma loves trouble." it's a lighthearted romantic comedy, based on the Jane Austen novel, starring Gwyneth Paltrow (as Emma), Jeremy Northam (as Mr. Knightley) and Alan Cumming. Emma is a female Narc. She loves meddling. She sees other people as characters in her fictional romance novels, and engages in matchmaking. Then there's the paternal Mr. Knightley, who's always scolding her, even in front of other people. (In the trailer you can see Jeremy Northam repeatedly saying "Emma!" in exasperation) In the novel, but NOT in the movie, Mr. Knightley proposes to Emma by saying that he knew she'd be his wife ever since he was a teenager and she was a baby in the cradle... he was a teen when she was born. Mr. Knightley is a Narc, he's more controlling of Emma than her equal partner. One could argue that by marrying Mr. Knightley, Emma gets a perpetual childhood. I remember reading "Emma" my junior year of college. Traditionally, juniors read "Pride&Prejudice",but I think *SOMEONE* may have been envious of Colin Firth, hence the re-assignment. My classmates would compare the ex-Psych and I to Mr. Knightley constantly scolding Emma. It is Jane Austen, and therefore FUN. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmMCTU_OIbY

The Simpsons

It's a funny TV show, full of pop culture references. The ex-Psych watched this show religiously, so classes would start with a recap of the previous night's episode. Somehow, he didn't manage to ruin it. In "The Simpsons",the title characters come across as lovable Ns. In the recent episode "The Food Wife" (with the voice talents of Mario Batali, Anthony Bourdain&Gordon Ramsay), Homer throws a fit because Bart&Lisa prefer being with their mother. He bawls, and literally crawls up the stairs. To mock his wife&children's food blog, Homer strips down to his undies, and sits in front of the fridge, stuffing his face. He is condescending&patronizing to his wife&her interests. Marge purposefully sets up Homer to go to a meth lab instead of a fancy restaurant so she can come across as the hero&save him. "The Simpsons" can be seen as a mockery of narcissism, and pop culture. Besides, laughter is healthy.

Svengali (The 1983 TV movie)

In the 1983 version of Svengali, Peter O'Toole stars as Anton, a faded rock star who is now a vocal coach, and Jodie Foster stars as his student (then lover) Svengali is clearly the Narc. Ironically, the more successful Jodie's character becomes, the more dependent she becomes on Anton. An ex-boyfriend asks her if she's into wrinkles. Jodie Foster is not really convincing as romantic leads-so this movie requires a leap of faith from the viewer. A suspension of disbelief. She was more credible holding her own against the psychopathic Hannibal Lecter in "Silence of the Lambs." In George du Maurier's original, Svengali, being the villain, ends up dead. In the 1983 movie, Svengali lives, and in the end he's seen with a new student. Here's a clip in which Jodie Foster sings under O'Toole's spell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zrvCv8tTUo

I watched the Tatum and Ryan

I watched the Tatum and Ryan O'neil series recently. Ryan O'neil is a colossal narcissist. He made my skin crawl how he turned everything around to play the role martyr!! He was incapable of of any insight into harm he does. He reminded me so much of my NARC. Also watched the Judds little reality series. Naomi's inability to see anything in anyway other than how it effects her was shocking.

Like Water for Chocolate

Laura Esquivel's novel is beautiful and romantic-with some Mexican recipes thrown in. The movie is somewhat disappointing, but the soundtrack by classical Cuban guitarist Leo Brouwer is excellent. Pedro is DEFINITELY a Narc. His wife, Rosaura, is demonized (she eventually becomes obese&gassy as a result of her sister's cooking) Tita is kept around to be Pedro's mistress. Pedro isn't man enough to marry Tita, defy convention, he simply strings along his wife and his mistress. AND they're sisters, so it's triangulation at its finest. Unfortunately, this story of forbidden love (who doesn't like forbidden love?) raises NPD to a virtue. A sad irony is that Laura Esquivel eventually divorced her husband, the much older Alfonso Arau (she had watched his TV shows as a child) who directed this movie. Here's the trailer, it's in Spanish, so it has the flavor of a telenovela: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vqm8_GjKDBc

I've always threatened my NARC that I'm going to write a movie about him and get Will Ferrell to play him. Is there such a thing as a biodramedy...true dark absurd movie...funny too because life with him has been surreal. I've HAD to find the humour in it. And I will...it's on my to do list. Who is Clark Rockefeller?A

Who is Clark Rockefeller? A MUST see for everyone, I`ve just seen it and it blew me away..after a true case, "the longest running con artist in FBI history"..over 20 identities, names, children, women, accused of murder, passed for over 20 jobs you can imagine, and pretends to be a Rockefeller so crazy.. Shows how many tacticts and games Narcisists play, how he makes women to ask apologies for things HE does..no identity cards, but women were still in love with him, with a STRANGER. Who wants to see a Psychopathic case/ Narc in action should really check this one out..crazy I found an article too about this "renaissance man", caught this time: http://www.firstwivesworld.com/relevant-news/clark-rockefeller-child-abductor-jail

Eugene Onegin

Tatiana loves Eugene Onegin, a handsome&jaded aristocrat. She writes him a letter honestly confessing her love- and he cruelly rejects&humiliates her, lecturing her about "maidenly reticence." After she gets married to a prince, and her husband sings her praises, Eugene sends her love letters. In the end, she sends him away. Sofia Tolstoy, who was married to the Narc Leo Tolstoy, admired the fictional Tatiana's strength. The classic from Alexander Pushkin. (Dostoevsky references Pushkin's "The Shot" in his "Notes from Underground") Trailer for the movie- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypMwgbba-Go Ralph Fiennes, now famous as Voldemort, is Eugene Onegin... and Arwen is Tatiana.
