Limits on when you could talk about the relationship????

I was told that we couldn't talk about relationship problems at certain times... Like in the car. I mean he barely would talk about anything DEEP outside of writing me emails. But I find it bizarre that he gave me limits on things like that. Only when he was ready. I get people have boundaries but NO compromising. I felt like he put limits on me like a child at times.
