Domestic Violence & Religion

Religious teachings can serve as either a resource or a roadblock in addressing the issue of domestic violence. As religious communities, our responsibility is to minimize any barriers facing abused members of our congregations and maximize the resources that exist within our religious traditions.

The following quote by Reverend Al Miles frames the issue of domestic violence within the religious community, identifying complacency among many clergy with confronting abuse and the urgent need to address the problem as a pastoral duty.

"For the most part clergy have hindered rather than helped women break free from their abusive partners. Our apathy, denial, exhortations, ignorance, and misinterpretations of the Bible have added to women's pain and suffering and placed them in even greater danger. The time is long overdue for us pastors to stop turning our backs on domestic violence and begin speaking out against this sin. We have a responsibility to preach and teach the biblical truths about God's love, which binds women and men together as equals rather than ordering them in a hierarchy. As long as we refuse to fully carry out our pastoral duties, victims of domestic violence will continue to crumble emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually underneath the weight of brutality and scriptural misinterpretations, which no human deserves.

My ex N used his faith and

My ex N used his faith and strong religous beliefs to serve him when necessary (hypocrit). One of his favorite quotes from the Bible was something like this, and he said it over and over and over again..."Man is to love his wife like Jesus loved the church and the wife is to submit to her husband." It didn't end there. He manipulated the Bible. "I have a covenant with God, even tho my divorce is final" "we cant move in together, how would it look? I have an image to uphold, I am highly looked up to in the community" all the while, he was fucking me while still married and he continued to do so after the divorce even tho premarital sex is a sin. Whatever worked for Len. That's all that mattered. I wonder what happens to Bible manipulators??? I feel I got a little off topic but the bottom line is that if we'd married, I would have been in hell based on his interperatation of the Bible and I can see how this would have a trickle down effect with clergy. They are very literal when if comes to the writings.

religious narcs

if you have read my story - Psycho-Boy still, to this day (and did with me) goes on & on about what a good Jew he is. He's accused me of 'Loshon Hara' (Hebrew for the Evil Tongue) which means he's accused me of SPREADING GOSSIP for telling my story (I have NEVER posted his real name, etc ANYWHERE!!!!) And he's accused me of 'Rechilus' which means Bad Speech which is TRUE; as well. He made both these accusations on here and here. Both of these accusations are FREQUENTLY used by Jewish molesters, abusers, users, batterers, etc TO SHUT UP THEIR VICTIMS. And there's also some Jews who have a prohibition about GOING TO THE AUTHORITIES. You know what? None of that stopped me. If he wants to call me a bad Jew... that's not my problem. God knows what I am about and that's the only 'person' I answer to. So many of these Narcs and Psychopaths go to church or temple or whatever regularly and memorize the Bible. They go on Christian or whatever religion dating sites and troll for decent women or they swoop in on someone vulnerable at services. Sandra Brown, MA has said they USE religion as a cover for their pathology. Don't try and figure out his Biblical interpretations - they're probably as F-d up as he is. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Free articles & information for abuse victims: http://abusesanctuary.blogspot.com Effective Coaching for Victims of Pathologicals http://one2one4victims.webs.com/

Thanks for this link,

Thanks for this link, Barbara, this is a topic I want to start doing some serious writing on. More as it pertains to emotional abuse...because as you can see, if the the church is this lame on physical violence, it is 10 times worse when it comes to emotional violence.
