Alcoholics and other addictions

The N's father is an alcoholic. N drinks every night until he is out of it. I'm not sure if he is an alcoholic but very close. He relies on alcohol.

What is the connection with alcohol addiction and Ns?

Mine smoked marijuana and lied about it

My ex used to live in California and had a medical marijuana card. He said he hadn't smoked since he left Cali 2 years prior, it was a bunch of BS. After I called him out on the lies he told me, he spent everyday at his relative's house smoking up, mind you during this time he was living with his parents and told them that he was going to work everyday. I think deep down he knows there is something wrong with him and the marijuana helped him numb it. It also likely helped him control the only emotion he felt, anger.

Mine simply could not

Mine simply could not function in everyday life, doing everyday things without alcohol. Going to shops, ANYTHING! he was incredibly moody if he didn't have access to beer. It was ridiculous! Sunday breakfast was beer for him. He was drunk almost every night. One week he decided not to drink and he had NO personality at all. He was cardboard. An empty vessel.

My N's dad polishes off a

My N's dad polishes off a bottle of bourbon or red a night. I think he is borderline alcoholic. My N used to grow dope. He is a total addict and would have around 4-5 bongs a day. I thought he was just loosing his mind from abusing drugs and that is why it seemes like he had a personality disorder. I think it affects his memory a lot and his moods. He tried to quit once it lasted a day and I couldn't handle his bitchyness.

To what is he addicted? Let me count the ways

The ex-Psych prof was a RUMORED alcoholic... but he hit the bottle publicly during the final D&D. He taught an off-campus class centered on... drinking wine. One of my friends said, "When normal relationships break up, women cry and men drink beer." I informed her that the ex-P was drinking beer, and I was crying... there was the little complication that his long-distance girlfriend was moving in with him. He had alcohol issues. He'd sometimes say he wished he didn't drink. He'd reminisce about drinking wine during class at the University of Virginia (that wasn't BS, it's true) He hit the junk food hard during my junior year. I was volunteering, he was having an impassioned, creamy fling with Little Debbie. A *NORMAL* sign of a man having an affair is that he works out, makes himself look GOOD for the new supply... not pack on the pounds. He had paunch&a double chin by the time his girlfriend moved in. There was the masturbation habit that he told me about. Watching "The Simpsons." He ALWAYS brought up the latest Simpsons episode in class. "War and Peace" is probably the most benign of his addictions. He is stuck in it. His colleagues are more versatile. One of them is a pianist, but he also reviewed a book at the Wall Street Journal about identifying clouds. Another leads a workshop for teachers. His colleague from grad school is a guitarist. His FATHER wrote a book about organic gardening, tho it's not his specialty. He hasn't moved on from "War and Peace." Yikes.

If they're Narcs

The emptiness and darkness and voids are more than likely being self medicated through the booze. Hugs

alcoholism

I don't know what the connection is but I do know that mine is seen by those close to him as an alcoholic and most people stop there and believe that is what his problem is. I do know that alcoholism is generally not the ultimate problem rather a symptom of a greater underlying issue.

addictions

All narcs are addicted to something. For mine it was porn and self-loathing/pity. If nothing else, they are addicted to themselves. My N didn't drink. I think because he couldn't handle it. Or maybe because it would react with the other 18 medications he was taking haphazardly to control his ADHD, depression, insomnia, and anxiety.
