Anyone see the newer episode about the psychopathic patient? I just watched it. I was hoping they would do an episode about sociopathy. The ending is of course completely ridiculous, but there are some amazing scenes when we watch the sociopath manipulate her husband and then D&D him. Then it juxtaposes her condition with House's Narcissism - but we see that House actually does feel remorse. Interesting show!

February 6, 2010 - 7:05pm — quietude (not verified)Okay, I hulu'd it...it was a very interesting episode.
How creepy was the girl...YIKES!
(spoiler alert)...
And she miraculously started feeling something at the end, wouldn't that be nice if we can do that to the brains of some folks we know!
Off topic ~ the scene when House is writing the check and James is talking with him...hilarious!!
Spoiler Alert
February 6, 2010 - 9:52pm — KellyDouble Yes!
Something that was interesting about this episode too, the Dr. Foreman/Hadley relationship. After Foreman fired her, I labeled him a definite narcissist. It was interesting that they chose this episode to have him apologize and acknowledge it, but I still don't like that he's worming his way back into her favor. I just don't believe him. I don't think he would have apologized unless he HAD to.
I saw the show as well and
February 5, 2010 - 3:20pm — nhtmfI saw the show as well and wanted to run and get all the copper I could for the next guy I meet. Imagine if a copper deficiency could really change a psycho into someone real??
Copper!
February 5, 2010 - 8:14pm — KellyThat would be amazing! Like Kryptonite - - they would suddenly feel . . pain . . .
N's and P's on TV
February 5, 2010 - 2:00am — baddreamYes, I did see that episode. Very interesting interaction between House, the "N" and his psychopath patient.
I also watch "Nip Tuck" which is in its final season. The character of Christian Troy so embodies the evil traits of the narcissist-- in everything he does and all of his relationships. Whoever developed his character had to have had first hand knowledge -- its is like they took all of the traits of the N's we write about here and put them all into his character.
Wed. night, 10:00 (EST) on FX.
OMG - LUV NIP TUCK
February 5, 2010 - 3:24pm — KellyI just got into it last season, just as I started reading about narcissism.
Only thing is, Christian does show empathy here and there. Not in his relationships with women. I think he is narcissistic but not full NPD or he wouldn't have given the money to that Swedish kid. He wouldn't have wanted to bail out his son. I could be wrong though. It's fun to analyze him and more fun to look at his ass :)
One Narcissist I can take pleasure in viewing from afaaaaar . . .
Christian
February 6, 2010 - 1:25pm — baddreamI think it made him feel good to bail out the Swedish kid and perhaps he identified with him on the issues of his abuse. The Christian character was seriously abused as a child.
It is interesting to watch Sean unraveling as he realizes how Christian's narcissism ruined his entire life. Christian keeps managing to pull him back though, every time he tries to get away.
How about the way he treated Kimber? That was really disgusting, and then last week, with her MOTHER? As for bailing out his son, he knowingly sent an innocent man to his execution.
Yes, I love watching it too (from the safety of my living room!)
No o oo o
February 6, 2010 - 6:24pm — KellyDon't tell me! I'm waiting for Hulu to catch up with Nip Tuck! I haven't seen any of the episodes from the new season yet. . .
You're right though about the Swedish kid . . It was just a reflection of himself.
Television
February 5, 2010 - 8:23am — Barbara (not verified)I don't think House is as much a Narcissist as simply NarcissistIC as a defensive mechanism due to his chronic pain and not wanting people to "feel sorry for" him.
A real Narcissist would never feel remorse
TV gets it wrong a LOT. Which perpetuates myths about pathologicals.

yay! House
February 7, 2010 - 9:10pm — grossotI watched it on Hulu because of this post. Love it. I just want to be on the other side of that two way mirror when the Dr.'s study my N's brain as he's in the MRI machine. I just want to see the image as it does not flinch when discussing his precious little princess daughter. I want to see the look on the doctor's faces when they see he does not have emotion!!! Then I'd have proof. This scene is my new fantasy!!!
Perhaps our N's all ate nuts by the bucketfull!

February 8, 2010 - 12:52am — Barbara (not verified)wouldn't that be a trip?
mention demeaning sexual acts and inappropriate behavior to a Narc and see if his brain shows any different response when reading a menu of Chinese food.
Heck I think we could sell out a theatre to all us victims while we just sit back and watch each other's Ns fail the MRI tests.
I recently had to have a Spec-T Scan of my brain. The last one was 14 years ago, just a year after I became ill. I still had some Bells Palsy and had to be brought to the hospital for the test. I remember them showing me the results and it proved serious lack of oxygenated blood flow to various parts of my brain. Emotions lit up but many were either blunted or overly triggered neurons in my brain.
It's not a fun test... it takes an hour of lying on a very uncomfortable board, with your head totally strapped in so you don't move at all! My back & legs were screaming by the time I finished. They asked me various questions about my exNH, my children, my clinical depression, my feelings about my disability, my feelings about my inability to work and earn a living as well as mundane stuff like the weather, what I had for lunch, where I buy my clothes, etc.
This last time my brain lit up like a Christmas tree! They said I had established new pathways! Since my insurance wouldn't pay for rehab I remember doing crossword puzzles and then of course caring for my children, journaling, short walks with my dog... all to try to regain some sense of normalcy. The doctors said I had done a great job and also pointed out that emotionally I was very normal even empathetic, while accounting for the depression & PTSD issues. The only downside was muscle control and pain centers were still messed up... but that's to expected with M.S.
I secretly wanted to take all the films and shove them under my exNH's nose and scream - I'm not crazy! But I will save that for any time he tries to get custody from me. HEE HEE HEE

February 8, 2010 - 2:16am — KellyThis should be a mandatory requirement for dating! Right up there with STD screening! Under no circumstances will I marry without getting tested!
mri and stds
February 8, 2010 - 1:05pm — racheMy ex had an std check,but!- Kept messing around, and, those std checks are only as good as you are monogamous. And,we know these perves arent that.I'm thinking one of his flunkies faked the papers anyhow.
Scares me the most!
February 8, 2010 - 2:25pm — KellyI was playing it on the risky side with my last ex N . . . I cannot wait to get my blood test. You have to wait at least six months to know for sure. . . freaks me out to know that he may have lied about his previous sex history. I slept with a guy, completely protected the month before who may have also lied about his sexual history . . . I think I will feel soooooo relieved after that test. . . . Not having sex for a long time again after that!
They all

Dr. Gregoryy House, M.D.
February 5, 2010 - 8:20pm — agnesmurphy17House has empathy. He's just a bit adolescent & likes to push the envelope. And, I agree, a bit self-absorbed in his pain.
But, you know, about a year ago I started to watch House reruns. I had never seen the show before. I realized that everybody thought that House was a 'pain in the butt' & impossible. I would sit there & think: House is a piece of cake compared to my husband. House is a downright nice guy & a pussy-cat.
I sat there thinking . . . this is insane. I watch television & wonder how is it that people have conversations. Things would happen & characters would articulate controversial opinions . . . I would tense up expecting the other character to have an explosion (as my husband would). No. These characters were able to have a dialogue. OK it's TV . . . but, I decided to leave my husband, in part, because of House. Compared to my husband, House is a really, really nice & easy going man. In fact, my husband made more of his little aches & pains than House did about his leg which is really messed up & should have been amputated.
chronic pain
February 6, 2010 - 3:29am — Barbara (not verified)as someone who suffers from chronic, relentless pain - it does start to absorb your energy, your thoughts, everything... it can make you seem narcissistIC and even heartless at times because you have no energy or patience for anything but blunt truth...
...chronic pain sufferers really live in a special sort of hell no one should ever have to go through. I have heard Hugh Laurie interviewed about how he's studied people with chronic pain and folded it into House's character.

Chronic pain
February 6, 2010 - 12:28pm — racheMy Ex N does have extreme chronic pain(back injury)but the psychologist who tested him for personality disorder did not say it was a contributing factor to his diagnosis of NPD.Can it skew a test?
pain skewing tests
February 8, 2010 - 2:22am — Barbara (not verified)no pain won't skew a personality disorder test...
it may skew a lie-detector test, but nothing else (that I know of)
Lol!
February 5, 2010 - 11:06pm — KellyOMG! You need to send that in a letter to Hugh Laurie! "I decided to leave my husband, in part, because of House. Compared to my husband, House is a really, really nice & easy going man."
Right
February 5, 2010 - 3:16pm — KellyI agree, but I don't think the show ever diagnosed him. I think he is narcissistic, but not NPD. There are definitely varying degrees in narcissism and he's got some traits, but not all - which is why I'm finding the show even more interesting!
Full NPD, not so interesting anymore! I would have no sympathy for his character. ;)
The ending of that show was so ridiculous though. Curing a psychopath - - LOL
Two and a Half Men
February 5, 2010 - 7:43pm — GhostBusterI like to watch that show because they purposely make Charlie look like an N a-hole. And Charlie Sheen does a superb job in his "role"...cough, cough...I think he is likely an N given his latest round of marital problems. I know, I know...his first wife Denise Richards was a publicity hound, tactless at times, and ran off with her former BFFs husband, but I do think she probably was verbally abused by Sheen, as she now claims. As we all know, being with an N can destabilize us, temporarily lose our minds to the point we don't even recognize ourselves and even flee into arms we shouldn't.
I don't believe Sheen is an N at ALL!!!
February 5, 2010 - 7:47pm — Barbara (not verified)don't buy it - Sheen has cleaned up his image and is known in Hollywood as a basically nice guy.
I don't believe any of the B.S. The current wife ADMITTED she went out partying and was drunk & high when she called the cops. She is in rehab now for drug addiction.
Of course if she blames Charlie for DV... the pre-nup is invalid and she could get millions... MOTIVE? hell yes.
