Needing validation :(

I have read book after book on narcissism. I've read all kinds of things on what they say and what it actually means, but one thing my ex always said has never been mentioned in any book I've read. Anytime I would gently tell him things he would do that hurt my feelings, he would say he can't do anything right, he's always in trouble. Would tell his sister that he felt like he was always in trouble. The devaluing really amped up after my atty strongly suggested that he not stay the night anymore when my kids were there bc my ex husband is always looking for something to take me back to court over (even though there isn't anything in the decree that states I can't have an overnight guest). So back in feb with tears in my eyes I told him he couldn't stay the night when my kids were there. He had pretty much moved himself in the previous November. He kept saying I kicked him out and he wasn't welcome in my house anymore?!?! Really?? I was always inviting him and his 15 year old son over and feeding them. That's when it all really got bad and he threatened to get all his stuff out of my house several times when we would argue. His reasoning for the discard was that he was always in trouble and couldn't do anything right. I was obviously comfortable pointing out his flaws and in his words "or what you perceive as my flaws". Has anyone else heard these things and are these common for narcissists? Just needing a little validation today :(
Thanks!
Michelle
