Are You Dating a Narcissist? The Six Red Flags

In order to recognize a narcissist, it's important to understand the difference between healthy self-esteem and narcissism. Narcissism is the “enemy” of healthy self-esteem. It is something that looks like the real thing, but is not. Narcissus, as many know, is the legendary Greek character who fell in love with his own image and drowned because he stared too long at his reflection in a pond of water. A narcissist is obsessed with his image and has no real sense of self.

Wes on "The Bachelorette" is a Raging Narcissist

Ok, you know I despise reality television, but I cannot resist watching ABC's "The Bachelor/ette" because inevitably, there is always a character on this show who is a raging Narcissist. This season it is Wes, the bachelor who was rightfully dismissed from this week's show for being a raging Narcissist.

I will gladly take this opportunity to provide America with a real-life example of a quintessential Narcissist by dedicating my blog talk radio show to discussing what makes Wes a Narcissist, as well as how to recognize a Narcissist before you get hurt.

Wes on "The Bachelorette" is a Raging Narcissist

Ok, ladies, who is watching the Bachelorette this season? As you know I find reality television apalling at times. However, ABC's "The Bachelorette" always seems to suck me in since it's about dating and relationships. I love observing human behavior, especially when it comes to romantic relationships. While I don't know if any of it is real, I do like to analyze it all.

Jillian has a great personality and seems very intelligent. Unfortunately, as has happened to many of us, she is being duped by a con-artist. Wes is a raging narcissist. He is as fake as they get. Both Tanner and Jake tried to tell her, but she does not want to believe it. Why does she refuse to believe it? Because he is charming as hell and brilliant at manipulating her.

Ladies, Why are We Drawn to the Bad Boy?

I was being interviewed yesterday about my book and one of the questions the interviewer asked me was:

"Why do you continue to be attracted to narcissistic men?"

I explained that narcissists are fun and fascinating people at first. They're charming, adventurous, fun, witty and great conversationalists. They're typically very well-read, fun to banter with and very philosophical. I explained that you do not see their true colors until after settling down with them.

His response to my reply:

"Oh, so you like the bad boy?"

This led to an interesting conversation about what women love about the bad boy. Barbara forwarded me the link below and I'm posting it here because I'd love to hear your thoughts. What do you think?!

Listen to this evening's blog talk radio show on Narcissism

When a narcissist creates and projects a false image of who he imagines himself to be, he is either somatic or cerebral. In other words, he either attracts attention by utilizing his physical attributes or by applying his intelligence. The somatic narcissist flaunts his body, exhibits his muscles, and brags about his physical conquests. A cerebral narcissist uses his intellect or talent to attract attention. All narcissists are both cerebral and somatic. However, one type is always dominant in a narcissist. The narcissist may swing between his dominant type and recessive type, but he prefers utilizing one over the other. In this week’s show, we will discuss the difference between a cerebral narcissist and a somatic narcissist and how to recognize one before you get hurt.
